All bunged up

Please can anybody help me? I am so uncomfortable. I gave birth to my 4th baby yesterday and although the birth went well I am desperate to empty my bowels but seem unable to. I did suffer from piles towards the end of my pregnancy and that isn't helping I just seem to be so bunged up and yet can't get it out (sorry).
This happened last time as well and it was absolute agony when I finally went. This time I've had loads of water, prunes and I really don't know what to do.

Well done on the baby! Try Golden Linseed from a health shop for your problem (even ok if breastfeeding). Sprinkle them on your cereal and other foods.

Have asked a friend... and she said :
GP prescribed some very sweet sticky liquid called Lactulose. It worked a treat. It was also given to her son at 12 months old for same prob. So is v gentle. Ask your Midwife or Health visitor.
I was also told olive oil (like 3 tablespoon a day) either on its own or on a salad. Lots of cooked fruit (and prune of course).
Drink quite a lot of liquids, chamomile tea is very good and soothing too

Hope some of this help - BTW constipation postnatally is very common but it is unpleasant !

I could be wrong (it has been known!) but I think camomile tea is a diuretic so probably not the best drink for you. The same goes for caffeine-containing drinks. I was given lactulose after having ds and it worked a treat. Also, you could try Fybogel (available from pharmacies and supermarkets). As for diet, definitely lots of water and fruit should help (pears, melon, nectarines are particularly good). Hope your problem is resolved by now anyway.

Congratulations on your new baby.

I didn't go to the toilet for several days after dd wsa born but eventually it all righted itself naturally, so I wouldn't worry.

boyandgirl · 24/09/2003 14:46

Sitting in a warm bath helps - and even 'going' in it if you're suffering. Walking and doing bicycling movements with your legs also help. Lactulose is a god-send. Some people recommend taking it for a month or so after giving birth, which I agree with (from experience with and without!).

And well done and welcome to your spiderling.

bobsmum · 24/09/2003 14:49

Another vote for Fybogel - tastes like orange sand, but works v well

spidermum · 24/09/2003 22:44

Thank you all so much. Sent dh out for some fibrogel and will definitely try and get some lactulose. Have got some linseed in the cupboard. I think I'll try all your suggestions. I had some success this morning but still feel am walking a little strangely. Little fellow is a poppet though.

Dried Apricots are pretty good! Congrats on the new arrival.

I found that Weetabix with hot milk finally got things moving!

(Then had to get Mr Muscle plug and pipe unblocker to get the loo in service again! )

boyandgirl · 26/09/2003 14:38

spidermum - don't take everything at once!

aloha · 26/09/2003 14:58

I also had lactulose. Don't go mad on it though! I find a cup of black coffee (preferably real) and an orange first thing in the morning is very effective. Can't believe I'm posting this!

Congratulations BTW! Boy, girl? Name?
