Gave birth nearly 2 weeks ago - blood clot/part of placenta(?) just passed. What should I do?

TMI incoming

As the title says I gave birth just less than 2 weeks ago (Wednesday 23rd March) and this evening I went to the toilet before bed to clean myself and felt a lump coming out. At first I thought it was just a stringy bit that I've had to pull out from time to time but then I realized it was much bigger and pulled it out to find it was a big bloody lumpy thing the size of my fist.

Now idk what to think. Was it part of the placenta? Is it normal? I read that if part of the placenta was left in it smelt bad and thats how you know but its just smelt bloody not rotten. Should I see someone about this? Is it urgent? My MW has discharged me from MW services on Sunday as everything was fine but the health visitor hasn't been in touch yet and idk what exactly a health visitor does anyway.

any help appriciated, TIA as I'm really quite concerned.

Oh sweetheart!

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I called the out of hours GP and kept the clot-thing in a jar in the fridge(!!!)

Are you bleeding now?

For me, it was because I'd been on my back a fair bit after my section and blood had 'pooled' and formed a big clot. The OOH GP said to see my normal GP in the morning, which I did, and they said there was nothing to worry about.

So my advice would be, have a good look at the clotty thing and call your OOH gp/maybe NHS direct? Or the midwife services number anyway, they're usually fine to answer a query - especially something like this - even if you have been discharged.

Better safe than sorry, etc etc.

Thanks...

Phoned the labour ward where I gave birth and she didn't seem to think it was anything to worry about but has sent me to bed to rest and is going to phone me back after she has spoken to the head midwife. She seemed to think I would be ok just to go to my GP in the morning.

MW just phoned back - she has told me to come in to check my tummy as the clot was rather large. Have to wake OH and baby up :(

Hope everything comes up normal...good luck!

It's good you're being seen. Hope it wasn't anything too serious and you all get back to sleep okay.

Jupiter118 · 05/04/2011 08:10

Catherine hope you are ok!

ajandjjmum · 05/04/2011 08:13

Happened to me - I think they checked the clot, but it was all fine and no treatment.

Sure it'll be ok. Smile

Congrats on your new arrival!

I lost one of those big clots after dd2, I was walking down the hospital corridors and I felt it come out. Mind it was only 2-3 days after she was born, I showed the mw and they were all happy that it was totally normal. Hope everything is ok. :)

Hope you are ok. Think it's wise they had you in to check tbh as that is on the large size. If you have no other symptoms then chances are it's a clot not placenta remnant but better safe than sorry.

FannyFifer · 05/04/2011 08:27

That was pretty large, hope all went ok at hospital.

Lavitabellissima · 05/04/2011 08:32

Congratulations on your baby Smile

I had a c section and bled afterwards for 10 weeks Sad Angry Sad

I had 3 occasions where I had large clots and on the 3rd one I went to A&E as I was bleeding a lot for half an hour. All was fine, as you said they only worry if it smells and if you have any pain in the pelvic area. I phoned the labour ward and the gp on earlier occasions and they'd told me not to worry.

Thanks for your messages. Still at the hospital. They're concerned since my bloody discharge hasn't changed colour (i didn't know it was even supposed to) and is still a fresh red colour. To be on the safe side they're sending me for a scan to check there is nothing left inside me and they're giving me antibiotics to rule out infection. I stupidly dropped the clot down the toilet as I really didn't think anyone else would want to look at it!

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you're in the best place and getting good, aware care. I hope it's nothing to worry about but I'm really pleased you're being taken seriously and well looked after.

Northernlurker · 06/04/2011 18:21

Hope you're doing ok
