Cs booked. How much of pubic area to shave?

I've just read my elcs leaflet and it says to shave your pubic area or they'll do it.
Appart from the fact that I haven't seen it for ages how low should I go?
I think after emcs they shaved the top inch or so.
Do I need it hair free or is a short layer of stubble (number 1 with clippers type thing) enough. I get really itchy regrowth if I shave there.

Thanks and sorry if TMI! :)

My leaflet doesn't say anything about shaving, and I'm pretty sure I wasnt shaved last time. Sorry that I can't help

harrygracejessica · 31/03/2011 11:26

Normally just the top inch needs to come off.

SoozleQ · 31/03/2011 16:24

I waxed the top couple of inches - they still took a razor to me.

CrapBag · 31/03/2011 19:58

My MW told me to shave down to the labia (I think). Don't know why, the cut is running along the top. It won't be completely hidden by hair, not that I'm bothered though.

MerylStrop · 31/03/2011 20:01

I'm surprised that they expect shaving to be necessary - seems old-fashioned to me. At LWH where I had both an EMCS and a reluctant ELCS the advice was not to shave, as it can actually increase the risk of infection. I would clarify with the hospital.

I took the lot off for my ELCS - with the ..er assistance of DH because I hadn't seen my ladygarden in quite a while. On the up side, I didn't get any itchy regrowth because of the pain relief Smile

I'm going to book in for a brazilian before mine, mainly to avoid itchy regrowth from shaving with a healing scar. Also heard stories of midwives wielding blunt bics...

Zimbah · 01/04/2011 21:03

I intended to shave before my ELCS but then DD decided to come early so I hadn't done it yet. The midwife did about an inch I think. The razor definitely not blunt though, they only use them once!

Bonkerz · 01/04/2011 21:07

with my last CS i just shaved the top inch as told by midwife BUT im due to have one in a few weeks and have decided to take the lot off this time. I found the dressing they put on after the op stuck to what hair i had the next day and made taking it off difficult, as a non shaver i also found that the catheter issue etc was hindered by the messy garden! DH agrees that the healing of the scar was made difficult by the wet hair stopping the scar from drying after washing. I have my sensitive bikini hair removal cream and it will all be coming off 2 days before i go in for the op!

Crawling · 01/04/2011 21:27

If the scar is in your pubic hair how does the hair still grow there (sorry my question mark is broke) I have a scar on my head and hair does not grow there, sorry if this is too personal.

princessfifi9 · 01/04/2011 22:32

I had an emergency C section and decided to get a bikini wax before I went in just in case.
I am so glad as before the section the midwife came at me with a dry razor...she took it away and said it was all tidy!!!

She did make me remove my toenail varnish though which my dp had to do as I could not see my feet!!

@Crawling , I had a section 5 years ago and it doesn't really grow on the scar.

Meglet · 01/04/2011 22:36

They shaved the top inch off mine both for both CS's. I usually wax quite low so the scar is about an inch above the hair these days. Although it's really faint now.

emsyj · 01/04/2011 23:24

Is it normal to be shaved then??? I had emcs last year but was not shaved - and it was definitely not tidy down there! Really Shock that they shave you??

meditrina · 01/04/2011 23:40

If they are going to stick a dressing on you post operatively, it's an act if mercy to shave the area where it will go. Just think of how much it hurts to rip a plaster off eg your arm, where the hair is fine and the general area less sensitive.

SnoozleDoozle · 02/04/2011 06:01

I had an emcs and was shaved by midwife, and it was one of the worst aspects of the whole thing - for about a year afterwards I suffered really badly from ingrown hairs which got all infected, and which have left scars. I am pg again, and intend to book a brazilian or similar when I get near full term, as I never want to be on the receiving end of a Bic wielding mw again.
