How long did you spend in hospital?

With DC1 I spent 4 nights... however he was on a light blanket so a couple of those nights I had to stay, I stayed the extra to get as much help with breastfeeding as possible.

With DC2 I spent 2 nights. Just to recover and concentrate on BF really, had no complications that meant I had to stay in.

I'm now expecting DC3 and asked my midwife about a private room (you have to pay) as the hospital I'm going to is known for being very busy. I intended on staying 1 night. She seemed very confused about why I would want to stay at all (as long as no complications) as this is DC3. Is it not normal to have a bit of recovary time after giving birth anymore? I was recently told about a first time mum who went home just hours after giving birth.

I feel like a wimp now Sad

I can't help as I only have one DC, but my nan said when she had my mum she stayed in for ten days!! I know of people who have been home in a few hours so I think it is pretty normal these days, unfortunately. But, if you want to stay then stay until you feel well enough. You are not a wimp!

No 1 - 2.5 days
No 2 - 3.5 days (3 weeks early)
No 3 - 6 hours
No 4 - 6 hours
No 5 - 24 hours but would have been sooner if I had had him earlier in the day.

rasta · 21/03/2011 13:31

DD1 around 10 hours, same with DD2.

nunnie · 21/03/2011 13:38

No 1 - 2 days (manual removal of placenta kept me in longer)
NO 2- 2 days (EMCS).

Ended up on the childrens ward with no 2 after 3 days because he had jaundice, was on there with 3 other mothers with 5 day old babies the others were because of breastfeeding problems. The hospital was very very busy and were obviously discharging people a wee bit too soon. My son's jaundice was not mentioned during paediatric check, but was mentioned by a midwife when she brought the meds for taking home, so she checked my noted and said that because the Paedratician hadn't mentioed it then it obviously wasn't a problem, and was probably due to all the bruising and the fact he was 4 weeks early.

Stay in as long as you wish, some people want to get home as soon as possible and others don't.

DS1

cherrychoo · 21/03/2011 13:42

Was in for 2 weeks beofre having ds then after i had him i had to stay in for 5 days.

Had a cs and it was the "consultants" policy apparently to keep his ladies in for 5 days post section.

I was desperate, DESPERATE to get home.

harrygracejessica · 21/03/2011 14:10

48 hours after c-sec with ds
24 hours after c-sec with prem twins - they had to stay in so I went and got checked daily at hospital instead of at home by the midwife.

Is it more peaceful at home? I much prefer the idea of lying in bed and having dinner brought to me than going home to a toddler and a five year old Grin

I spent just over 10 hours in after DD1 (so about 13 hours in total) and that was only because I had to wait for blood tests as they were a bit backed up that day, otherwise I would have been able to leave earlier. I would hope to be out sooner for another baby.

DiscoDaisy · 21/03/2011 14:18

It's much more peaceful at home and with my 5th I went home to a house with a 8 yr old, 4 yr old, 2 1/2 yr old and a 13 mth old! Grin

BeeMyBaby · 21/03/2011 14:20

Incidently I wanted to get home asap as a had a very delicious Dominos pizza waiting for me there (and I was only offered potatoes in the hospital as I don't eat fish or posk which were the only food options they had)

NorbertDentressangle · 21/03/2011 14:22

DD - about 5-6 days but that was because she was jaundiced (borderline as to whether she needed treating or not, but in the end didn't) and slow and difficult to feed

DS - 24hrs. We could've left after 6 hrs but I wanted to make sure b/f was going OK as I'd had so many problems with DD

FanellaFox · 21/03/2011 14:23

We must have a very different idea of what peace is DiscoDaisy Grin

11 days with prem twins as they had NG tubes, and wouldn't let us put till bfing was established, and just over a day with DD as she had trouble feeding at first as her face was bruised (face-first presentation) They would have let me out sooner had it not been for that, and tbh I was torn, as I was desperate to get home and see my boys, but also wanted the relative peace and quiet of staying in hospital!

LawrieMarlow · 21/03/2011 14:25

DS - two nights. I had a pph after he was born (in middle of the night) and then a transfusion the next day. I had been in hospital for 5 days before he was born and so was keen to get out Grin. Possibly should have stayed in another night but was nice being home again.

DD - was in 24 hours in total. She was born at 1:30pm and I probably could have gone home straight away but found it easier having a night in hospital with just her.

Stokey38 · 21/03/2011 14:28

DD - 5 days
DS - 12 hours!

pinklaydee · 21/03/2011 14:30

Two days with DD, I was struggling with feeding and they wanted to make sure I was OK with it before leaving.
DS was a surprise home delivery, but had to be taken by ambulance with the light flashing and siren blaring. Stayed in two nights - gave DH the chance to buy a new mattress for our bed! Blush

DC1 - 6 days
DC2 - 5 days

It was brilliant.

No complications, but they were both born in Japan and staying in until breast feeding is established, wounds are healing etc is normal there (on the flipside, there is no particular provision for health visitors or midwife visits at home once you are discharged).

Also I had a private room with own loo and shower, and the food was very good, so I had peace and quiet and could just concentrate on the babies. I understand that is not necessarily how things pan out in British hospitals...

choccybox · 21/03/2011 18:25

DC1 3 hours after delivery.

Loved it, back home in no time with all home comforts and support. Was like a home birth without any mess! Grin

Kandinsky · 21/03/2011 18:31

DC1 48 hours

DC2 spent a total of 3 hours in hospital including giving birth and having lunch!

DC3 was prem so stayed with him for a week before deciding it was better for us all if I went home at night to sleep.

over night for dd1, and with ds and dd2 I had a shower after their births and got dressed and came home. Never made it onto the ward.

davidtennantsmistress · 21/03/2011 19:06

dc 1 - 5 days, mostly as I needed a blood transfusion but was cleared to come out after 4 days but then they decided DS had Jaundice & needed the box so had to stop the extra night in our own room.

DC 2 - am hoping to stop in for at least 1 night. slightly scared about having a brand brand new baby at home tbh.

Rosebud05 · 21/03/2011 19:15

Many PCT's have goals for a 6 hour discharge for 'normal, low risk deliveries' as they call them. Obviously depends what time of the day or night your baby is born.

I went home with dd the same day and stayed in overnight with ds as he was being monitored for infection, and got the impression this was the norm unless mother had had cs or other non-straightforward thing.
