"Natural" c-section video

Those who are getting an ELCS and would prefer things to be more natural might be interested in this video:

Warning - a bit graphic by its nature but no worse than One Born Every Minute!

Pretty sure it's filmed at Queen Charlotte's as the obstetrician is Professor Bennett.

Even if we can't get our doctors to do the whole hog, it does give some ideas of things we can ask for that they might be amenable to.

In case anyone is interested, the research paper on the subject is here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2613254/

Oh my gosh how lovely!!! Bought a little tear to my eye (although the pg hormones do that lately!!)

After having an ELCS with dd3 which I HATED I am now facing a repeat CS. If I could just get them to carry out a natural caesarean it would make a world of difference. I especially have an issue with the fact that my baby was terribly mucussy afterwards, struggled to bf & ended up transitional care as she lost so much weight.

Is there any advice as to how to present this method to the Consultant without appearing to tell them their job iyswim??

Now have my heart set on this!! Thank you for posting the link!!

I spoke to my consultant about this during my second pregnancy,he was trying hard to keep a straight face!Angry

One of the reasons I found my first section so difficult and a more "natural" section would have been beneficial was due to ds being whisked away ,only getting to hold him while all wrapped up,no skin to skin at all until 12hrs later the next day.

I can understand why if your baby is in danger or for health reasons but in my ds case it was just protocol and routine.

5 years later with my second ds it was much better but as I said they didnt really take the whole natural csection thing seriously, they said skin to skin in theatre would almost be impossible due to possible cross contamination/infection etc.

But in the end ds2 birth by was really lovely and put to rest alot of negative/sad feelings that I had carried from ds1 emergency section.

Things were much calmer,ds2 was held up over blue cloth,he was brought round to see his cord being cut,no rush to weigh him, skin to skin within about 30mins of op in recovery.

As I say there was 5 years betwen biths so maybe things have changed.

Goodluck

Yeah, I'm not convinced I'm going to be taken seriously when I ask for some of the things in that video either! But if you don't ask, you do't get I suppose. Nothing to lose. I think some consultants are a lot more open than others to this kind of thing so it's down to the consultant really.

muminthesun - I completely agree - with an EMCS of course the priority is elsewhere, but with an ELCS? Why shouldn't it go that way? It's a shame they can't pass the baby to the midwife and then to the mother as suggested in the video so we can have skin to skin.

As opposed to dangling the baby above the sheet for about half a second, dragging them off to the resuscitaire thingy and then rubbing the life out of them with a towel whilst they shriek the place down, then handing them to DP wrapped in a towel :( Sure, you usually get skin to skin in recovery but by that point the baby is probably not in quite the same frame of mind!
