Postnatal question

Wasn't sure where to post this as there doesn't seem to be a postnatal section...

Anyway, my little one is now 11 weeks. I'm breastfeeding and haven't had a period yet.

For the last 3 days my womb has felt achey/painful - sort of like period pains but a bit different.

I'm not sure if this means my period is coming or something else going on.

Anyone experienced this?

Thanks

I have not experienced this (but then again at 11 weeks I was not experiencing anything due to sleep deprivation). If you are concerned you should definitely go and see a doctor. Or a nurse. BTW: I didn't get my period until I almost stopped breastfeeding - it was down to one breastfeed in the night - when baby was 10 months old, in case you are wondering.

If you're breastfeeding regularly you probably won't have a period for a while.

The achey feeling could be you're body healing itself after giving birth but definately get you GP to have a look/ feel.

I breastfeed both of mine, and both times got my periods back within a few weeks. Although I can't remember the exact dates I know it was before 11 weeks with both.

So, yes, it could be your periods are returning. However, as you are not having a period I would get yourself to the GP and get checked out.

@SmallPurpleCat - it may be the feeling of your uterus contracting and getting back to normal, should happen within about 2 weeks, but don't forget the uterus has been stretched in pregnancy and labour so it may still be doing so. Sometimes it is more noticeable during breastfeeding. If it doesn't feel right or normal (you know your body best), it is advisable to see your GP. Urinary tract/bladder infections may mimic normal uterine muscle actions. While breastfeeding your periods may stay away until after you stop breastfeeding - mums who breastfeed for a year can have no periods for a year; it's quite common. (But NB though you have no periods you can still conceive. If you have resumed intercourse but don't want to get pregnant, then use contraception because no period can still mean you are releasing an egg). (Some mums feel it's a bonus to be period-free for a while!)
