If you had retained placenta ....

Did you have assisted delivery, natural 3rd stage or managed 3d stage? If you had a managed 3rd stage did you have ergometrine, oxytocin (sometimes called syntocinon or pitocin), syntometrine or Misoprostol (given orally)?

I had syntocinon induction at 40+15, forceps delivery, managed 3rd stage with syntometrine. Didn't want a managed 3rd stage but they just gave me the injection, probably as I had a PPH (750mls).

I don't know technical terms and it has been a while. But I had this with both mine. My first was a quick labour (around 1hr 30) with hardly any contractions, and somehow they didn't really work. The mid wife had to tell me when to push based on the monitor. Immediately after delivery my body shut down. I had an injection and drip (I think) to try to help me deliver the placenta. This didn't work so I was sent to theatre for an epidural and the placenta was removed by the doctor.

2nd time around, a similar experience, but they thought the placenta had delivered. Over the following 6 weeks my bleeding was horrific (but I'm used to crime scene periods), after a scan I was rushed back in, knocked out and the doctors manually removed the placenta again.

Haven't had any more so not sure if it would happen again.

Why do you ask? Hope you are ok.

I had a completely natural delivery with no pain relief at all (intentionally, as I was in a midwife-run birthing centre) but had a very stubborn placenta, so we all (me, baby and DH) ended up going by ambulance to hospital and I had the thing removed under a GA. DD slept through it all and DH went off to get a curry, apparently. I dislike hospitals so we all buggered off as soon as I was legally allowed to (4 hours after the op) at 2 in the morning. It was pretty sore for a week afterwards - I only realised how bad after DD2's birth, with no retained placenta, and much less afterpain.

So despite having gone through a retained placenta, I can't understand your questions in the slightest. No idea what drugs they gave me - DD had been born and was healthy and I didn't give a toss about anything else, must have been the hormones. Are the drugs you mention supposed to get the placenta out? Ah, now I think about it, the midwife did give me an oxytonin injection, but it didn't work. Hence need for op.

Sounds similar to my experience MMG. I spent longer on a trolley waiting to be wheeled into theatre for the placenta to be removed than actually giving birth!

8 years on, it is a distant memory.

following waterbirth with G&A, tried for natural 3rd stage (had prev. had 1 managed and 1 natural 3rd stage). after 1 hour and no progress was given injection - ergom, iirc. 30mins still no progress had synto put in via IV, already placed for GBS+ antibiotics, m/w tried controlled cord traction without success. called dr who tried and snapped cord off, hurt A LOT. was taken to theatre, given spinal and had morbidly adherent plancenta pulled and scraped out by hand in lots of pieces whilst i watched Shock

in hindsight i realised that after baby born i didn't have a single further contraction to try and expel placenta as with previous births. i'd never heard of adherent placenta and if i'd know what i knew now, i'd've asked for a general rather than just spinal Angry Sad

I retained after my first.....gave birth naturally with no pain relief or stiches which I was so happy about! But then had injections but it wouldn't budge and was taken into theatre to have a main removal!!!!!! So ended up having an epi and stitches!!!!!!!!!!!
Second child was fine though!

Sparklies · 04/03/2011 23:29

I had a precipitous natural delivery, gas and air only, and then the injection. They had to pull on the cord as my uterus wasn't interested by that point, and at the time they thought they got everything out.

Two weeks later with high fever and almost blacking out from blood loss from huge clots, and a subsequent three nights on IV antibiotics with a newborn to take care of on a busy postnatal ward, perhaps they weren't as successful as they thought..

I had first DD emergency section. Second DD had naturaly then contractions continued but placenta wouldn't budge.
Rushed to theatre to have it manually removed all the time contractions coming quicker and stronger what a relief when I had the epi.
Distant memory now.....till I read this I'll probably have nightmares tonight.

Thanks girls.
