2 caesereans and pregnant with number 3

Hello,
I am 16 weeks PG with number 3 and have been told that is very likely i will have to have ELCS. I was induced with my first and had to have EMCS as hyper sensitive and only dilated 1 cm. Had ELCS with number 2 as no dilation even at 42 weeks and consultant would not induce. There is so little info on whether VBAC will be possible but I would like to know if anyone else has had this. I have had no trouble bonding or feeding after caesereans but as this is my last baby I would like to know if VBAC is possible.
TIA

Strictly speaking you can make your own choice about how you give birth. I know that the Dr's advice or opinion on the safest way is usually couched as "we won't allow you to do x,y or z" but actually, they can only advise, it really is your choice. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) say: "Women with a prior history of two uncomplicated low transverse caesarean sections, in an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy at term, with no contraindication for vaginal birth, who have been fully informed by a consultant obstetrician, may be considered suitable for planned VBAC."

There is a really good thread here: www.homebirth.org.uk/vba2c.htm
Which although on a homebirth site is largely about medical research on vaginal birth after repeat caesareans in general. I think what evidence there is suggests that scar rupture is slightly higher following 2 or more rather than 1 previous caesarean, but you've still got a 98% chance of no rupture. Drs are not supposed to augment the labour (give a drip) as it can increase the chance of scar rupture.
See: www.caesarean.org.uk/FAQ.html#VBAC

Sorry - no personal experience to offer as I only have 1 DC but I have done a lot of childbirth research hence the slightly techie answer x

Sorry this is a better rcog link: www.rcog.org.uk/womens-health/clinical-guidance/birth-after-previous-caesarean-information-you

Hi someone else posted a similar message a few days ago.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childbirth/1159724-Does-2-c-sections-mean-you-have-to-have-a-3rd

I'm really shocked at the number of people who have to fight to have vbac's! They're really into it here (brighton) if anything you have to fight to have an elcs second+ time round. I hope you get the outcome you're looking for.

LibraPoppyGirl · 01/03/2011 16:18

I'm finding the same here missp2010. I'm in Eastleigh in Hampshire and I'm 26wks pg with my second. First was DS, EMCS 13 years ago. I thought I was going to be told that I would have an ELCS, but they are really pushing for a VBAC. Which I want to try, although nervous because of such a horrid experience first time round (36 hour labour, 5cm dilated, fetal distress and critical oxygen levels etc etc).

Fantastic links CalmInsomniac I'll take a proper look myself later too.

luce81 I pray that everything goes well for you, I really do. I have no advice as I'm in the same sort of position myself. Prayers for a safe delivery whichever option you take Smile x

Not a huge help to op but Librapoppygirl I have had 3 successful vbacs after my first was an ELCS

luce81 · 01/03/2011 16:55

I had my second in Brighton and they were really hoping that I would have a VBAC but I just didn't go into labour so had to have CS at 42 weeks. Thank you all very much for all the info, I had a look at the link and always get bogged down by what has the least risk but the info is really helpful. I suppose I just have to hope that I go into labour before 40 weeks but it seems so unlikely. I know that if I do have a CS it would probably be for the best. I am new to mumsnet and really appreciate all your responses Smile

My friend has had two VBACS after 2 c sections.

LibraPoppyGirl · 01/03/2011 17:55

Thank you BadRoly hearing your experience really is encouraging Smile.

And your friend too bamboostalks, it really is so great to hear other peoples experiences.

luce81 my midwife told me that they won't induce if you have had to have a previous EMCS, so that may be why your consultant wouldn't induce you the second time.

I really hope it goes okay for you this time and welcome to MN Grin x

Induction was not an option for any of my Vbacs - something to do with the scar rupturing?
