What could this reaction have been when I had my CS?

I had a lovely ELCS with DD and it was so calm and much better than the 3rd dregree tear and forceps birth I had with DS.

However, as I was being stitched up, my throat started to feel really itchy (as if there was a dog around, I am allergic to most animals) then I got really wheezy (I have very mild asthma and it rarely plays up, usually only if I am around a really hairy dog for a period of time) and I started to see stars. DH told me after I went grey.

I told the anaethatist who then gave me a mask with something in (not just oxygen but can't remember what, think it may have been salbutamol) and it made me feel better. She listened to my chest though and said it didn't sound bad at all.

It really felt like an allergic reaction, I have had them enough to know what it feels like, but I can't understand to what. I had an epidural with DS and was fine so I can't see it being that. AFAIK, the only thing different was the spinal block but I don't see how I could have been allergic to that. Also a theatre would be sterile, definitely nothing I am allergic to around.

Has anyone else had this odd reaction before?

Are you allergic to fruits? If you are allergic to strawberries you could be allergic to the contrast they use in hospitals; bananas are related to latex allergies (I think I am correct but you should look it up).

Maybe ask your midwife what is used in the cs?

Could have been shock? You don't have to feel physically panicked or upset to react to a cs with shock. It's a traumatic event for your body, even if your mind is happy. Some shake, some can't breathe properly.

There are other things they give you though as well as the spinal. I know on my notes there's a list of things I had pre-cs that I didn't know about. From local anaesthetic to antacids. Could have been something in there that triggered an allergic reaction?

Thanks.

No fruit allergies. Did have antacids etc.

Will mention it if it ever needs to happen again, but I'm not really worried, just wondering what it was as no one explained it. The theatre staff were all lovely though. Smile
