Group B strep and planned section

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of what treatment is offered for a planned section when you have tested positive for group B strep?

I'm also a bit concerned about going into labour before section date and then needing an emergency section without having time for the antibiotics...

Your views would be appreciated.

Currently we dopnt give IV abx for elective sections.
The GBS is picked up vaginally - if waters are intact then there is generally no risk of infection.

However - other hospitals may have different policies

Alimat1 is correct, GBS is contracted via the birth canal, some women do choose to have antibiotic cover anyway although it is not recommended. However, you need to bear in mind that IV antibiotics have potential serious consequences for you, and more particularly for baby. We don't know what the long term consequences are of such aggressive therapy. Certainly there is a risk of infection via the cannula, baby will need 4 hourly obs whilst on antibiotics and for 24 hrs after (meaning you will be in hospital for that time.)
Of course, you may not actually have GBS at the time of giving birth, as it is transitory so they may not even be necessary, but you won't be retested so you won't know either way! Sorry, I know it is a minefield for parents but I just sometimes think that it helps to know as much as possible before making a decision.
