Horton / Stoke Mandeville / John Radcliffe?

I'm recently pregnant, and before even seeing my MW they want me to choose where I want to give birth.

I've been given the options of the Horton Hospital in Banbury, Stoke Mandeville in Aylesbury, or John Radcliffe in Oxford.

Has anyone given birth in any of these places and have any views or comments on their birth there?

Any advice appreciated!!! Smile

I've given birth twice at the JR, one cs and one VBAC. I've also spent a lot of time on the high risk pg (silver star) ward and in NICU/SCBU.

I had brilliant care for both births, really every mw I came across was lovely, although they were obviously stretched. The anaesthetist I had for my cs was incredibly kind and helpful. The cleanliness was not brilliant - the bathroom on the observation ward (where I spent the night after the cs) was covered in blood and the toilets just opposite SCBU were usually grim, although the main ward was fine.

Not sure how great the post natal care on the wards would have been in terms of help with bfing etc - with ds we were in SCBU, and then dd was my second so I was left to get on with it (which was fine, I didn't need any help, but they were so busy I'm not sure how much I would have got if I did).

I have a friend who gave birth at the Spires mw led centre at the JR and was very happy.

Don't have any experience of the other two although I have heard a rumour they have waterproof monitors at the Horton so you can have a waterbirth and CFM - may well not be relevant to you!

Postnatal at the JR is appalling; the midwives are ridiculously stretched, and its all down to a couple of Health Care Assistants who didn't seem to know their arses from their elbows.
But I don't have anything to compare it with, I've never given birth at Stoke Mandeville or the Horton.

The recent they ask you to decide now is so that they can get you into the system and organise your 12 week scan. If you don't know much about them, I'd go for the closest one for the time being and, in the meantime, do some research and see if you can arrange a hospital tour for each of them and then, if you prefer a different one, you should be able to change it. After all, if you were to move to a different area (as I did), then you'd have to change hospital.

I ended up giving birth at Stoke Mandeville 16 months ago and would definitely go back there if I were to have a second. Crucially, the care during the labour itself was fantastic and I felt that they listened to me even when things got a bit fraught (DD's heart rate crashed). The delivery suite had just been opened so was pretty state of the art with en-suite bathrooms in each room. The after care was also excellent. A MW or a nursery nurse came to check my latch each time I fed DD, a student showed us how to bath DD (something I'd been getting really wound up about having never had much contact with newborns) and, fantastically, when I couldn't get DD to settle in the middle of the night one of the MW took her for a walk around the corridors until she dropped off. Having had an epidural, I couldn't get out of bed for a while after DD was born and DP had gone home so they had to do everything for me - get me water, pass me DD etc. They were obviously stretched and sometimes you had to ask for something a couple of times but generally I was really impressed and would go back again. A couple of things to bear in mind is that just before a shift change, the MW are less helpful (but then anyone is just before they go home) and, obviously, if you've asked for your water to be topped up but someone else has suddenly started to bleed, they're going to deal wit that rather than your water and, by the time they've dealt with that, they may have completely forgotten about your request.

If you're considering using the birthing centre, its in the same building and on the same floor as the delivery suite so, if there are any complications, its not far to go.

On a practical point, there never seemed to be any parking spaces and do take your own towels as the ones they have are about the size of a tea towel.

Friends of mine have also told me that the medical care at JR is fantastic and, of course, it is a teaching hospital. They weren't very impressed with the post-natal care but both have said that they would go back there if they had a second as they were so impressed with the care during labour itself which is what really matters.

I had my dd at the Horton and spent 2 weeks antenatally and she then spent 4 weeks in the Scbu.

My care needs were met well but I wouldn't have another baby there purely because their Scbu was so dire.

It was 6 years ago though so probably not relevant.

Murtette · 20/02/2011 18:56

One other thing - before deciding, try and find out the policies of each of the hospitals is about the nuchal fold scan and telling you the sex of the baby at the 20 week scan. Different hospitals have different policies

apples82 · 21/02/2011 08:41

Thank you all, your comments and views have been really helpful. I think Horton is the closest, but Stoke Mandeville seems to have very good reviews on it.

I'll have to do a google map search and find out distances.

My MW is back from holiday today so I hope she'll ring to ask which hospital we'd like.

Thanks again.

I had a fantastic experience at the midwife led unit at Stoke Mandeville. The facilities are great and the staff were brilliant (plus the consultant led unit is on the floor above if you need it).

No knowledge about the other hospitals you mention.

firstforthought · 22/02/2011 17:11

staff at the JR are fantastic. cannot compare though, sorry. friend was not happy with spires mw led unit but she also praises normal delivery suite.

Lucylikeslilies · 22/02/2011 17:34

I had both my DDs at Stoke. They were not great first time around but when I had DD2 last year they were much improved. I ended up having a planned CS for second (so much for my home birth!) so I can't comment on the delivery suite, though it looks very nice. The ward itself is somewhat dated but clean and the staff were very good. There were a few first time mums in and out of my bay and the staff seemed to take good care of them, especially helping with BFing.

Oh, and Congratulations! :)

Hi Apples, I'm in the same boat just found out and choosing between jr and stoke mandeville grateful for advice

apples82 · 25/02/2011 10:02

Hi lcrendon,

Well my MW asked me again for the choice, so i've plumped for Horton in Banbury. JR is a bit too far. I might change to Stoke Mandeville because i've heard very good things, but for now, Horton is closest.

I plan to have a look around Horton whenever I get my scan date, but also book in for a tour around Stoke as well.

Stoke seems to be a bit fresher with nicer facilities, if you see either of them before me then let me know your opinion of the facilities.

Where are you based, you must be local to me to have the same choices?

Hi Ladies
Just to buck the trend I've transferred from stoke to the JR. Mainly because I have cardiac complications and acute cardiology is based at wycombe (my local, where I had dd and ds, but now have only a MLU so won't touch me with a bargepole!) not at stoke, but also because I've heard a few horror stories in the last few months about stoke being so over-crowded because of everyone from wycombe having to truck over there now.
Also stoke is a bit in the middle of no-where and can be a bit of a bugger to get to if the tradtors are out! That said headington in rush hour is no fun either!
jx
p.s. I can probably let you know more in a couple of weeks!

apples82 · 28/02/2011 08:47

Oh yes jammiedodger2, let us know how you get on!! Smile

I gave birth at the Horton last week and they were brilliant! I had a difficult labour and birth, but the staff were all (through several shifts) really great, supportive, wonderful. And I got my epidural within 20 minutes of requesting it!

Don't know anything about Stoke. The JR have a great reputation, but also do tend to be very busy.

HTH

apples82 · 01/03/2011 08:24

Ooh CONGRATULATIONS Diamondback, sorry to hear that you had a difficult birth and labour, but well done!

Enjoy your LO Grin!
