Just found out a close friend had a fit 12 hours after baby born yesterday. I'm worried sick. Anyone know anything about this?

All I know is 20 hour labour, epidural, forceps delivery.

Thanks

Hi there,

sorry to hear about your friend. i had a fit following a v straightforward birth 7 weeks ago. it was a suspected pre-eclamptic fit and happened about 2 hrs after the birth. i just felt faint in the shower and woke up with medical staff around me.

hopefully your friend will be fine. i was and just had blood pressure monitored for the next few weeks.

hth

Hi, I also think it sounds like an eclamptic seizure.
I had mine (x2) as I was going into labour. They can be very dangerous but the good thing is baby is out, so baby will be safe. The hospital will have to monitor her BP very carefully, and she'll possibly be treated with magnesium sulfate to prevent any more fits if it is eclampsia.
Hope she's ok. She'll need a bit more support when she comes home, I personally felt like I'd been hit by a train. I'd also advise her to talk it over with someone from the midwifery unit once she's feeling a bit stonger. Because mine was in labour I still feel quite traumatised by the whole experience. There is a facebook group, Action on Pre-eclampsia, they are a registered charity/support group, they have a lots of good advice there.

Apparently she has had two brain scans today to check for fluid on the brain. Does this sound like what they would do for eclampsia?

I had a brain scan to make sure there was no lasting damage. They also wanted to check there were no other underlying reasons why I seized. My BP was low for an eclamptic seizure, but exeptionaly high for me as it's normally very low, IYSWIM.
She will have to let DVLA know, they will write to her consultant etc, if it's definitely eclampsia, she should be able to continue driving in a few weeks as it's classed as provoked by pregnancy. If not she may have to stop driving till DVLA give her the all clear.
