Tens machines

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but do tens machines really work? I've just hired one because I want to try any and all pain relief available to me while in labour at home. My sister claims they do nothing. Others say they take the edge off. Has anyone had an experience of a significant effect on pain?

My tens machine was great. I still use it now - for period pain and also as I have very painful legs and feet, I give them a good zap too.

I had back pain with both labours and tried tens first time round. Did nothing at all for me I'm afraid. I'd got my 'natural' options sorted by labour two - positioning, making a big racket (aka 'vocalising') and then the pool were what worked for me.

Everyone is different, so I think it helps to build up a portfolio of ideas to try. If tens works, people seem to love it.

I didnt put mine on until the last hour (didnt think my labour would be that quick!) but I believe it helped - if nothing else they are a good distraction. I didnt have gas & air until the last 15 mins which I think is a result :) If I had another child I would certainly hire one again - well worth the money.

i loved my tens - i put it on when i was in triage and there were no rooms in labour ward s ono other pain relief options available. it really helped in those early stages, i then went on to have pethidine and used gas and air but i kept my tens on the whole time too and it was great, would hugely recommend the combination of all 3.
