For those of you who watch it, there will be a mum (Sammy) who gives birth using Natal Hypnotherapy on One born every minute on Channel 4 at 9pm.

How brilliant - hopefully make a change from a lot of the births they show on there.

excellent! I have just started using the cd's last week, will be great to see it in 'action' so to speak Smile

I have been avoiding watching one born every minute as I found it so depressing last series but I will watch this one. I gave birth 6 months ago using Natel Hypnotherapy and it was amazing. As my husband said, 'You wouldn't have known she was in labour!' We went on the NH course and I listed to the pregnancy relaxation CD at home and I found pregnancy much easier with better sleep and less health problems. The birth went exactly as I had imagined it whilst listening to the birth CD. I was completely relaxed and zoned out and it didn't even occur to me to ask for pain relief. The only part of the labour that was difficult was pushing my daughters head out but I found out afterwards that was because she had her arm over her head owch! Having a relaxed pregnancy and birth helped me to have a great postnatal time and I have really enjoyed these last few months. I wish I had used these CD's with my previous children, they really are brilliant. Thank you Natal Hypnotherapy!

Brilliant, I've also started using the CDs in preparation for the birth, it'll be great to see how the woman tonight gets on with it.

Sammy did so well - shame the programme focused so much on the few minutes of transistion / self doubt and did not show more of how calm she was the rest of the time - especially as she birthed her baby!

No I don't think you're allowed pethadine in the pool are you? I presumed that her mum talked her around! Although they didn't make it clear tbh.. I would have liked to know where she was at in terms of cm dilation etc.

wintersdawn · 15/02/2011 08:31

Yeah her mum talked her out of the pethadine, she only asked for it whilst she was in transition. in the end she wasn't even using gas and air to push.
Sounds like she used the course I've been using so I'm hoping that I end up with an easy labour as well! fingers crossed

It was a bit confusing as the narrator said she was hypnobirthing, but what they showed did look like Natal Hypnotherapy.
Lovely birth though.

Praise be to grandmothers though!

The ones on this programme have (generally - one or two unpleasant exceptions) illustrated why birth support has traditionally been the business of mature women......

I have just taken a course on Hypnobirthing... Not sure if it is the same as Natal Hypnotherapy... Watched the show with my husband and we were not totally convinced that it would work. The woman seemed to be in so much agony. I wonder how long her total birthing time was... Is pethidine better than a mobile epidural and can one have it so late in the process?

orangemarzipan · 15/02/2011 12:59

lill8 - don't worry, I'm sure the hypnobirthing will help you and it's still worth practising. Don't let the programme put you off.

I don't think she had pethidine in the end. Personally I think she got a bit panicky just before the pushing stage which is quite common, even with hypnobirthing, because it's such a strange and overwhelming feeling. It's important to stay focused but the change in sensation is really strong so sometimes freaks people out a bit.

I did hypnobirthing and grabbed the gas and air at the same stage (had done without anything up until then). Once Sammy had refocused herself, you could see how she calmed down and how well she did when pushing her baby out.

I haven't watched the programme yet but I recently gave birth to my second baby using natal hypnotherapy, homebirth in a pool, with a doula.

It worked extremely well, rather than pain I really could just feel the sensations of what was happening. Midwife arrived, said I was only 2cms then left an hour later saying I wasn't progressing (though didn't actually check). The contractions were coming thick and fast but I'd been curled up quietly on my side in bed, with the duvet over my head to ignore her chatting and the action going on with DH getting the pool filled. She told me the pool would slow things down.

Our other kids were waking so it was a good time to slow things, so I got in anyway, and gave birth 45 mins later before we could get the midwife back!

I thought I could feel dilation (but the midwife's declaration of no progress left me slightly doubting myself) and I did have a panic at transition, saying I couldn't do it any more when I knew really I just wanted to push.

Agree with comment on mature women as birth partners. My lovely doula (who's had 5 children herself) was very calming, and I got back in the zone very fast and had babe in arms (caught by DH!) minutes later.

It was a much better birth experience than my first. I never once even thought about asking for any other pain relief. And of DH's experience of five, this was by far the calmest and most relaxed.

i had been avoiding watching OBEM as i have just completed a hypnobirthing course and wanted to avoid the type of births they show on there. I tuned in especially for this episode and really wish i hadnt!

The woman with the dp in prison was far more relaxed and in control and was surprised that she had gotten to 8cm so quickly and easily! Hypno mum seemed to be writhing around the pool from beginning to end.

On the other hand i couldnt stop chuckling at her attempts to negotiate just a bit of pethadine as i think thats what i'll be like!

EsioTrot · 17/02/2011 21:12

I didn't see OBEM but I used Hypnobirthing for the birth of my second child a year ago. It worked brilliantly and was a world away from the traumatic arrival of DS!

I also had a panic at transition but my DH and midwife helped me calm down (student midwife observing thought that contractions had stopped) and DD had a lovely calm, gentle birth in a birthing pool.

lily and prudence please feel free to PM me for more details or if you have any questions about the birth...I promise I don't work on commission for any HB practitioners Grin
