Does the size you or DH were at birth have any bearing on the size of your own baby?

Still at the TTC stage but managing to worry myself about the birth anyway! DH was a huge baby (12lb something). He was a second baby, though. I was a first baby and a far more reasonable 7lb something. Does anyone know if the fact that DH was so big at birth mean our baby is more likely to be very large? I am quite small and simply can't imagine how I would manage to get a 12lb baby out! Thanks in advance.

i was 6lbs 6ozs, dd was 6lbs 7ozs and ds was 6lbs 9ozs. no idea what dh was though.

dh and I were both mid 7lbs born and are now 5'8" and 6'2" and slim build. Dd was predicted around 9lb by both a growth scan (after I hadn't felt much movement for the 2nd time in two weeks) and the MW and given our background I thought that would probably be about right. In the end she was 5lb 14, progressed on to the 25th centile from the 9th and stayed there for a year - still a little dot now. It's weird really as both of my sisters are tall (I'm the shortest) as are most members of my family and dh's family are all medium-tall, so I reckon she'll eventually have a growth spurt and will end up pretty tall too.

PS I remember the feeling of elation at the 20wk scan when all measurements were right on average apart from her head circumference which, though within the normal range, was definitely on the small side Grin

I was 4lb 15 born (a tad early)
DD was just shy of 10 pounds. She looked like a 3 month old.
Both of my step kids were born by c-section as their Mums pelvis was too small.

Not in our experience.

I am 5'10" and was born 8lbs4, 52cm long.

DP is 6'2" and was born 8lbs12, 58cm long.

Little DS was born 8 days overdue and we thought he'd be 8lbs7 at least. But only 7lbs8! 54cm long though, so still quite tall.

I don't think it has anything to do with it. IMO it's a crapshoot. Even maternal diet and weight gain I don't think factor into it all that much. Not, obv when mum has GD (usually results in a big baby). But friend just had a titchling at 6 lb 14 oz and she gained 40+ lbs on her equally titchy frame!

I was 5 lb 5 oz
DH was 6 lb 6 oz
DS was 7 lb 7 oz

WTH???

BongoWinslow · 13/02/2011 07:44

My DH's mother told me 'Winslow babies are long and but not heavy'. Was certainly the case with BabyBongo who was very long (and still is) but slender (although still a bouncing 8lb 14oz).

PukeyMummy · 13/02/2011 16:06

I was 6lbs, DH was born early at 6lbs 1oz, DD was 5lbs 13oz.

When I went overdue, the midwife consulted an obstetrician as she was concerned about small baby, but when I told obs about my size and DH's at birth, he was convinced to let me go longer without inducing.

So that would tell me there's something genetic in it!

FWIW, small baby doesn't always mean easier birth. DD wrapped her arms around her head, so I had tearing and an episiotomy to get her out!

beckie90 · 14/02/2011 14:07

i was 2 weeks early and weighed 9ib 2oz and my partner was early and weighd just short of 7ib
ds was 2 weeks late and he weighed 6ib 7oz
currently 31+1 with 2nd and im sure hes gonna be quite alot bigger than ds was though.
so really not sure

Cleofartra · 14/02/2011 16:45

I was 9 lbs at birth and my first was 9lbs 6oz.

My understanding is that maternal birth weight can be indicative of your baby's size at birth.

charitygirl · 14/02/2011 16:48

In case no one said it then yes, maternal birth weiht is a leading indiactor of child's birth weight. Have never heard that paterbal's is though.

But there are many other factors (e.g. subsequent babies tend to be larger than first borns, gestational diabetes etc)

niniane · 15/02/2011 21:25

I was 7lb 14oz, DD was 10lb 13oz and 61cm long. However my mother was 10lb something so possibly skipped a generation? I also put on over 5 stone. Shock
