Induction - help me figure this out

So I am being induced at 37+5 (social /anxiety related reasons)

Had dreadful appointment with consultant to arrange last week. Dreadful because consultant was in surgery and registrar lied and tried to fob me off with nonsense.

I was quite upset and as a result was so relieved to be given the date that I asked nothing about the process.

Consultant has now gone on hols and is not back until the date I am induced. I have no wish to see a registrar who didn't know her arse from her elbow but this means I have no idea what is going to happen.

Only clue is that I am to report direct to delivery suite as opposed to the labour ward.

Any thoughts on how they are going to induce me. Will they use the pessary or ARM or drip?

Can't believe I didn't ask....

It will depend on your hospitals policies and whether this is your first child or not (with subsequent children they can sometimes jump to ARM as it's far more likely to work on its own). Check your hospitals website.

Thanks - can't find anything on their website. I cannot believe I didn't ask, although in my defence I had been there for 4 hours saw 7 different people Shock

This is my 4th child - lots of chat about her "popping out quickly" but really need some more scientific info Grin!

I was induced with my second baby last summer, and they started by using a prostaglandin pessary. If that hadn't worked within a certain time they would have moved on to a drip. Had I been slightly more dilated on arrival they would have started with ARM though.

As it was, the pessary was enough.

I think they like to start with prostaglandins unless v urgent need for birth to happen fast as it ripens cervix etc and hopefully leads to less further interventions.

I was induced at 37 wks at UCH (3rd DC). First they tried pessaries - 3 times, each 6 hours apart. Nothing happened so they went to step 2 (for them), breaking waters (ARM). Again nothing happened and in my case there was almost no water - one reason for the induction - so they almost immediately put me on a drip. Things went pretty quickly from there.

I am sure if you ring the hospital and ask to chat to a midwife they will be able to run you through usual procedure there.

HTH. Good luck Wink

Can you phone your community midwife, or if not ring the hospital and ask to speak to a midwife about it.

Its rubbish that the doctor didnt explain it whether or not you asked.

as well as finding out what method they use, its also worth asking what exactly what the sequence of events is when you go in and what the timings are. I would also double check if you are being induced on the delivery suite as its usually done on an antenatal ward.
