ventouse and back to back/ no urge to push.

Hi, seeing the forceps messages got me wondering. My d.s was delivered by ventouse 39 hours after my waters broke and he was back to back. The midwife said " Oh that's why he took a long time". Never thought about it before but if she was a good midwife, shouldn't she have known he was back to back before he was delivered? Aren't they trained to recognise this?

Also, I never got the urge to push at all. I wonder if this was because he was back to back and head in the wrong position? has anyone else experienced no urge to push?

Sorry two questions in one, I'm being greedy.

Incidently, my 2nd baby was born in 2.5 hours and defo got the urge to push there!

I had a back to back with my first and anterior placenta so he was not picked up until he was born also babies can turn so your baby may have been the right way and turned in order to make life harder Grin just before labor and MWs would probably get a mouthful of abuse if they asked to check babies position while you are in labor Grin.

However I also have a tilted womb(which means I get back cc regardless of babies position but there as still a difference dd were in waves DS was constant) so on DD my MW picked up that I was having back ccs and suggested DC2 may also be back to back, I said no and mentioned the tilted womb. So my second MW was better because she read where I was feeling pain and the first didnt.

Thanks crawling. I wasn't impressed with my m w during my first pregnancy as she said i was "being too much of a lady to push" oh yes i was really concerned about that after 30 odd hours of labour. But I just didn't get the urge at all. i only pushed when i got the contractions because i knew i was supposed to but had no concept of how hard to push because was getting none of the sensations (apart from the pain) that i later had during the 2nd birth. Oh what we ladies go thru!

DD was back to back and I felt the urge to push through the whole labour, hence why they didn't believe me when I said 'I really do need to push now!' I think it really does all depend on the person. My friend didn't have the urge to push and her dd was in a 'perfect' position.

It's strange, i wish i'd known that some women don't get the urge as everyone had told me that when the time comes you'll know, and i didn't. Having said that I'm glad i had two very different experiences because i can tell my own d.d what to expect, or not!

Didn't feel urge to push at all with ds1, but did when instructed. Was told off for not doing it very well! Lots of tears.

With ds2 did not push when instructed as felt no urge and was terrified of stitches again (24 first time). Finally got urge (very definite feeling). Would have given birth on first push if hadn't had cord around his neck - he slid back in. Born on second.

No urge with dd either, but she was born as I was changing position (felt like she slid out - was very strange).

Ds2 back to back btw.

it makes me so cross when they tell u off, it's not like you are thinking "umm can't be bothered to push now, the baby can stay there" I wish i'd been more assertive during my first birth but its all new so i just listened to her meekly which is not like me at all! Looks like not having the urge is quite common then.

if you dont get the urge to push it may be because the baby has not moved far enough down the birth canal to trigger the pushing reflex.

I never got the urge with DS1 as the very old fashioned midwife had me lying flat on my back. every time I tried to push I got terrible sciatic pain down my legs. ended up with synto drip/forceps delivery.

if you can try and maintain an upright posture this will encourage baby to move down and then the urge may happen.

Malpresented baby - DS was OT, sideways, I like to be different, also no urge to push, also told off for not pushing well enough. Sigh. Still I'm encouraged by the positive second birth stories on the thread.

CilantroLarry · 09/02/2011 22:30

Like Poppet, my dd was in something called deep transverse arrest (ot and slightly asynclitic). I had no urge to push at all and tried directed pushing for 6hrs. DD didn't move at all. Ventouse and manual rotation didn't work either and she was dragged out the sunroof.

They didn't know she was ot until the emcs. Sometimes you just can't tell.

I'm 8wks pg and already terrified.

I spent my whole labour completely upright but had no urge to push. And then the contractions stopped. Ended up with ventouse delivery. DS wasn't back to back though.

My ds was back to back and I had no urge to push until he turned around. The midwives didn't reaise he was back to back until they saw him turn.
