Has anybody been refused a c-section?

This is my second pregnancy, my first labour ended in emergency c-section.
I am 8 months pregnant and am seeing the consultant tomorrow to discuss options. I have been under the impression from the midwives that it's my choice so have finally decided c-section but have just been told by a friend that her sister ( due same time as me) has been refused one. Details not clear why but I was wondering if this is common.

Thanks in advance
Davina

Depends on the consultant but you can ask for a second opinion from another consultant.

I realise this is a week late, but thought this may help.

In many hospitals the choice of how you deliver has been taken out of women (and to an extent their consultants hands) and is now solely down to the PCT. PCTs were worried about costs of sections so have stopped allowing elective sections.

The obstetricians I work with are not in favour of this and believe that the rate of emergency sections (which are more costly that elective ones) will go up as a result, costing the PCT more. Also what about womens' choice??

There are things you can do, like write to your local MP, that have worked for some women.

Good luck with this, let us know how you get on?!

A friend was recently turned down by St Thomas' (London). She insisted and they granted it - after she was interviewed by a psychiatrist. She just stayed firm.

I have just been granted a section at Kings - I also had one there last year. Elective - no medical reason.

Here's the link to the other thread - it is sickening that the NHS is so callous. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childbirth/954494-Support-thread-for-those-of-us-who-are-requesting-an

Which way up is the baby? I can't see them insisting on a VBAC for breech Wink

I was refused one for my first (no medical reason) but asked for a opinion and got a consultant who agreed it (after a bit of a fight) My second ELCS was agreed muchmoe easily.

1944girl - I am very thankful that I was able to have ELCS for both mine or I probably wouldn't have had them. We are indeed lucky these days in comparison to how things were when you gave birth.

Ragwort · 13/02/2011 18:14

Yes - I was refused an ELCS - I ended up with an EMCS - no doubt that cost the NHS a lot more money Grin.

WidowWadman · 13/02/2011 18:44

I got my appointment for my ELCS (after previous EMCS) at the 20 week scan appointment.

I went in and explained to the consultant my reasoning and that it was based on my reading of the ROCG and the NICE guidelines (which seems to have sufficiently impressed him, that at least I had done my homework and was aware of risks and benefits of both ELCS and VBAC.

At first he suggested that I try a VBAC should I go into labour before the c-section date, if things progressed smoothly, but when I pointed out that I had a post partum infection, he immediately crossed the "might try VBAC" he put into my notes out and said I'm definitely getting a ELCS
