So after 2 weeks of unbelievably frustrating stop start contractions and wierd cramps (second baby), i went to the midwife this morning at 40 plus 1: she did a sweep, and it turns out I'm already 4cms dilated, and my cervix is 70 per cent effaced.
anyone else had this? how quick now till I get going for real? She was a bit cagey!

Wow- no idea re. Your Q (sorry), but WOW!! Good luck with the delivery. Hopefully it will be very soon!

If this is your 2nd baby, this is very common. Until you are having regular ctx you won't be classed as being in labour.

I was 4cms for over a week with my last baby.

thanks for the messages...and so quickly!

confirmed my fear that it doesn't necessarily mean the baby's about to drop. God this is frustrating. do you think me sitting on the sofa shouting, "c'mon you, get a bloody move on!" at my stomach while inhaling jaffa cakes will help?

That happened to a friend of mine. Then she went to sleep one night, woke up in the middle of the night with v. strong contractions and baby popped out 45 mins later - her DH had driven at illegal speeds to hospital and she got as far as the entrance, where she collapsed onto a trolley and gave birth as they wheeled her into A&E! She and baby were both absolutely fine. Just be prepared for a quick one!
