Contractions have suddenly stopped??

Hi all,

I'm 10 days past my due date with my 2nd DC and had a sweep on Monday then last night started getting contractions.

They got closer together and more painful and for ten hours solid were 10 minutes apart. I phoned the hospital who told me to wait until I had 3 contractions in a 10 minute period so I stayed at home. Then they suddenly stopped and now..nothing! Is this normal? Has this happened to anyone else and if so what happened next?

All advice appreciated..

God its so frustrating isn't it. Is there any chance the baby is back to back?? My labour was very odd, big strong contractions for ages that just didnt seem to get any closer together. And DD was back to back. Hopefully its just taking a while to get established and it will all start off again too. Hope others will be along soon with pearls of wisdom.

Good luck. Hope your baby will be here soon. Rest up x

Yep, happened to me. Every 5 minutes for 12 hrs, then nothing for a few hrs, then every 5 minutes again. Got to 3cm like that, but eventually had to be induced 2 weeks overdue. Same thing happened both times. It's so frustrating! Nothing you can do though, unfortunately :(

The baby is back to back, I didn't even think that would have something to do with it. I'm feeling so impatient which I know is pointless as he/she will come when they're good and ready, but still..

I would go out for a nice brisk walk to try and get them going again, and maybe bounce on a birth ball if you have one.

If you can get them going, try having a bath as if it's real labour it will help the contractions get going, and of course will help ease the pain for you. When I was in labour last time I filled the bath up very high, kneeled up with my knees apart and leaned over the side edge of the bath and it really helped the contractions to get going.

it's par for the course with a back to back baby... try to use a birth ball and move around and get the baby's head right down on the cervix... with an OP baby, the head is not as well fitting as a OA baby, so it can take a bit longer for things to get going.. if you find you are having painful contractions that don;t sem to be getting anywhere, try a bath to ease them

Anything changed there?

Spent the day having a walk, then a bath with clary sage oil, ate spicy food, pineapple and drank a cup of raspberry leaf tea and.... Still nothing! Oh well, looks like induction on Friday for me. Thanks for all the advice though everyone xx

Hi there, good luck to you! I had two or three hours of labour contractions with dc2 every evening for two weeks after due date before she finally decided to be born. The main concerns were whether or not we'd be able to determine when we needed to go in, and how to stave off pressure for an induction. I now consider it a two-week labour.

Lulumaam · 03/02/2011 08:02

if you are induced, DO NOT lie on the bed.. you need to be up and moving and working with gravity in labour anyway, and particularly with an OP baby, you need to get the baby off your back, sit on a birth ball or lean on the bed so you can swing your hips... good luck !
