Those of you who were induced, when were you given some privacy?

I was induced with DD at 40+1, the physical labour/birth was very straight forward - I had 2 pessaries and she was born 12 hours after the first one.

My big problem with her birth was the fact that I was on a ward with NO space or privacy until I started pushing 20mins before she was born, when they rushed me to a delivery suite in a panic.

I'm booked to have an induction at 40+11 on fri I really can't face that happening again.

So, if you were induced, at what point were you given a private space to labour in?

I want to try and figure out what the norm is so I know when I'm justified in kicking up a fuss and demanding my own space.

because I was on a ward last time DH was sent away for 3 hours in the afternoon when I was in strong labour, as it was outside of visiting hours, there wasn't enough space to walk around the bed with the curtain closed, I just can't face doing it like that again.

Mine was almost identical to yours, sorry. Labouring a room with 3 others, opposite one woman who spent the entire time crying because she was 15 days overdue and already been induced 3 times without success. No room to move about. I was moved to a room to deliver about 35 mins before DD was born. It was horrible. I fully understand your concerns about this time. I hope there are guidelines, but I assume available space on the day is the real problem.

Sad

I was the only one in labour on my ward, so was SO self conscious - the woman opposite was in for monitoring and had most her family and young children there most the day, it was horrible.

I'm hoping that maybe they might take the evidence of how quickly DD was born into consideration and not induce me unless they have space for me to deliver in later that day - they were very obviously expecting me to take ages to have DD and I totally caught them out.

with her I had high bp o had to be induced that day, this time I'll just be +11, so all being well maybe they'll let me go another day if they're v busy [clutching at straws emoticon]

Sheesh! Sounds awful. I was in my own room from the beginning and dh was with me the whole way through (dd1 born nearly 24 hours after first lot of prostin gel). I'm not in the UK though. Hope you have a better experience this time

KikiJane · 02/02/2011 10:19

I was pretty much in my own room on the delivery ward from the beginning, both times.

hairyclaireyfairy · 02/02/2011 10:35

I was induced and on the main ward, started labouring properly around visiting hours and asked the midwives if I could be moved to a more private area.
Moved immediately to a private room on antenatal ward till just before dd was born.
Did you ask to be moved?
Good luck

BornToFolk · 02/02/2011 10:41

I was in my own room the whole time. I think there was talk of me being lucky that the room was available...can't quite remember.
I had the pessary at 6pm and by 9pm was in labour. DP was supposed to go home at 9pm but luckily, they let him stay as it all progressed very quickly and DS was born at 7am the next morning.

I'm sorry your experience was so bad. As it went so quickly last time, do you have more of a case for asking for your own space this time?

RobynLou · 02/02/2011 10:50

I've spoken to them and they said to make sure the MWs are aware that I progressed quite quickly last time. That that would have a effect on when I got my own space, but it depends on how busy they are.

We asked many times to move, I was 7cm and asking and they said I might be able to go down in half an hour, before that half hour was up I was pushing.

You poor thing - I was on my own until things went wrong - then, because I hadn't ticked a box somewhere in the forms, I ended up with about 15 students grimacing at my bloody and torn nether regions... The only time it was less than 5 of us was whilst I was being trolleyed down to the operating theatre... MOST undignified!

hairyclaireyfairy · 04/02/2011 01:36

Ah no , now that is shitty :(
To ask and ask and still be left in a roomful of people is just wrong.
Hoping all goes wellfor you.

CountBapula · 04/02/2011 01:52

Sounds awful :(

I was on the ante-natal ward until I went into established labour (3 or 4 cm). Then they moved us into a private room on the labour ward.

LifeOfKate · 04/02/2011 22:07

Goodness, your experiences sound terrible!

I had a private room on the antenatal ward, i remember them saying that women being induced are given priority for those rooms as they will be doing a lot of their labouring on the ward. They then moved me up to the labour ward when I was about 6cm. I don't think it was very busy when I had DS though.

littleElif · 04/02/2011 22:18

i was on the ward in a room with 4 other woman until 2 hours before DD1 was born. by the time I was allowed into the delivery suite I was in quite a lot of pain - don't think the other 4 girls got much sleep while I was in there :o

I had a membrane sweep for DD2 (also for DD1 but didn't work) when I was 12 days late and she came on her own at term+15 (I refused another induction after my experience first time round). maybe this is an option to get the baby out before they will induce?

Portofino · 04/02/2011 22:23

I had already spent 3 weeks on the ante-natal ward being monitored. I went home for 10 days then came back to be induced. I asked for, and paid for a private room. Luckily one was available.

lostinwales · 04/02/2011 22:29

I was induced for all three of mine

Firawla · 04/02/2011 23:49

I was in induction bay (2 people in one large room but with curtains) until 3cm then moved to own room on labour ward, so can't really complain

Cambridgeferret · 05/02/2011 15:47

Sounds pretty awful...I had my own room for DD2 from when I was induced until 24hr post-natal, also my own midwife.

Flisspaps · 05/02/2011 15:54

I didn't need the prostin pessaries, so after spending 24 hours on the antenatal ward waiting for a delivery room to becomre free, I was moved to a delivery room for ARM. It was possible that I could have gone back to the antenatal ward Hmm but as there was meconium in the waters they kept me in the delivery room the whole time. I'd been in there four hours before they started synto.

millyjay · 05/02/2011 15:58

I was induced 4 weeks early because of health issues, so it took 3 days for my labour to start. Once it did they were not keen to move me because they said it would take about 12 hours.

But I made 'lots' of noise because I didn't like being amoungst 8 other women, most no where near due so they moved me into a room and I gave birth 3 hours later.

So, make a fuss, don't be polite it is your special time with your DH to have a baby.

Mahraih · 10/02/2011 18:44

I was induced at 41 weeks, having already been contracting for 16 hours.

They induced in the antenatal ward, and they moved me to a delivery room pretty quickly. Can't say how quickly, but there were no delays. There was meconium in the waters though, and bad CTG too. I imagine I'd have been waiting a LOT longer had that not been the case.
