If you're having an ELCS, how long before did you have your PRE OP!

39 weeks tomorrow, waiting for an ELCS as baby is breech. Hospital does them on Thursdays, Mondays and Tuesdays. I was told by the consultant that it would be the 3rd, 7th or 8th. I would be given 5 days notice (to which the MW I told after seemed very surprised at that) and I would get a pre op appointment a few days before.

As it is the 1st and I am still waiting to hear, I am assuming it isn't going to be Thursday but my cousins DP said they phoned her the day before her ELCS but she had already had her pre op.

I do want it to be the 7th or 8th but I am fed up of not knowing! Surely the whole bloody point of an ELCS is at least you can get sorted and organised and know when (barring emergencies obviously) you will having it?

What the pre op? You'd think I'd know since I've had 3 elcs. Grin

CrapBag · 01/02/2011 20:16

An appointment you have a few days before to do final tests (I think) and where they go through the procedure with you.

Ive had 3 sections and pre op assessment was between 1 and 3 days before section date surprised you dont have a date by now was given my date for 39 weeks exact as they dont want you going into labour good luck Smile

DelicateFluffyBunny · 01/02/2011 20:21

Hmm, don't think I've had a specific pre op appointment - just did all the paperwork and talk through the procedure the morning of the c-section.

CrapBag · 01/02/2011 20:25

I am wondering if I have been forgotten, it wouldn't surprise me with my hospital.

I don't get a pre-op. I have had swabs done by midwife and was given blood forms to get blood taken on Friday (section is tuesday). I haven't spoken to anyone (other than on here) about the procedure. I even have a neonatal alert in my file as baby has severe hydronephrosis and no one has talked to me about what will happen with that - just a letter to say a plan is in place!!

faverolles · 01/02/2011 22:21

I had to have bloods taken a couple of days before, but just saw the usual mw for that.
Anything else was sorted out in the couple of hours before the op.

My ELCS is booked for end of May. It' on a Thursday, I have to attend for bloods on the Monday beforehand, and then on the day before the actual section I'm seeing the anaethesist etc and get to do the pre-op admin.

They've already done my MRSA swabs

springlamb · 01/02/2011 22:27

I had mine early in the morning and the section in the afternoon.
Readytoburst - do they think they might take baby to SCBU after the section, or for a scan? It can be difficult to deal with baby going off whilst you're still being stitched etc. I found it quite distressing, I don't say this to upset you, just so that you can prepare for it and perhaps plan for birth partner to accompany baby with frequent pop-backs to keep you informed of things and tell you important stuff like 'he has a freckle on his foot'.
My eldest had hydronephrosis and spent a very long time on antibiotics, with frequent scans etc. He's a strapping 16 year old now who keeps his urine to himself!

Our hospital only did the pre-ops one day a week. IIRC my pre-op was on the thursday and my ELCS was on the following thursday.

Although I had to go up on the Tuesday before the cs for bloods, IIRC the blood had to be recent blood to get accurate results.

Readytoburst · 01/02/2011 22:39

Springlamb - no idea! I know that we'll have to see a paediatrician for trimethaprime straight away but that's it. The kidney tissue is echogenic so they are, of course, assuming the worst and talking about removing it. I'm hoping they'll at least do an ultrasound before we come home!

springlamb · 01/02/2011 23:11

Ah yes, the trimethoprim.
I imagine they will do a scan fairly soon, I really hope all goes well for you.

I just went for my 34 week appointment with my consultant yesterday and they booked my section date there and then after I'd signed the consent.

They let me pick the date between 3 dates that week, so it's the 7th of March. I've got my pre-op on the 4th of March which will take 45 mins and take bloods and do the MRSA test, and the midwife will be coming to inject me with blood thinning drugs on the 6th which is already booked and they gave me the prescription there to take home for when she comes.

It seems all different trusts do it very differently doesn't it?.

Can you not make an appointment with your midwife and ask her to go through the process with you in detail? At least you would know you'd get all your questions answered in time and have a better idea of the process.

Good luck by the way, I'm sure it will be all ok.

CrapBag · 02/02/2011 09:24

Its ok, I was going to phone them today given I am now 39 weeks but they phoned me this morning to say my pre op is tomorrow and section booked in for Monday (barring emergencies).

Good luck to everyone else who is having one too. Smile

Hope everything goes well for you! Remember to pack nice big knickers!

CrapBag · 03/02/2011 09:07

Yes I have some 'lovely' big knickers in a couple of sizes bigger than my usual size. Smile
