when did you go into labour? I'm 40+10 now and going into hospital at 40+14 for ctg monitoring to check all's well. Just curious! Obviously hoping will have had baby by then, but need to start thinking about how long I would let it go on for Hmm

A friend of mine refused induction and her baby arrived 16 days late. Good luck.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 27/01/2011 18:18

not a friend, but a girl i know went 20 days over due date. but, and this is a big but, she lieks drama and has been kknown to exagerate. quite likely taht teh 20 days over was 20 days over teh date she worked out she was due rather than the hospital given date IYSWIM.

mamasunshine · 27/01/2011 18:27

Ok so 2 days over the 42 weeks doesn't sound too scary! Thanks for your replies Smile

I went in for ctg monitoring from 40+14 too - I kept requesting a well-being scan (which many hospitals will make out they don't do) and finally got one at 40+18. discovered ds wasn't even engaged so decided it was time to give him a hand! Went in for induction within the hour and luckily all they had to do was break my waters and after that labour progressed naturally and I got the drug-free birth I'd hoped for.
All I can say is trust your instincts - I felt totally right to wait and then the morning of the scan I just felt different, that it was time to get him out.
Good luck!

Just make sure you count baby movements as well to make sure the placenta's still functioning properly. From what I understand, as long as that's still pumping the good stuff through there shouldn't be an issue. Good luck!

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 28/01/2011 07:40

My second baby was induced when I was 19 days overdue - the EDD from dating scan, LMP, and my knowledge of when I concieved all matched so I am certain DS really was that late. He was born early the next morning, so on the 20th day after the due date.

I was going for monitoring every other day from 40+13. They also did a scan at 40+15 to check fluid levels etc. They really really eally wanted me to go for induction from 40+7, it was clearly a a cause of constrenation to them that I chose monitoring instead.

mamacorner · 28/01/2011 08:55

I was 40+17 when they induced me with my 1st DD. Not that I particularly wanted to wait that long but the Consultant was quite laid back about the whole thing.

Induction was straight forward only needing pessaries, however she was VERY prune-like when she arrived, definitely well cooked and I had to go to theatre afterwards for a retained placenta..no-one seemed to be able to tell me whether this was a result of deterioration.
I think induction when your body/baby are ready is really not such a bad thing.

reikizen · 28/01/2011 08:58

I was term plus 17 when I admitted defeat with dd1! No problems with me or baby, wasn't overly large. Just didn't want to come for some reason.

One of my recent clients went to 43 weeks with both her babies (she had a homebirth with her second). Her Mum and grandma had long gestations too, I think it can be genetic and 'normal' for some women to be pregnant longer and not neccesserily a worry.

I went to 42 weeks with 1st daughter. I was booked in to be induced at 11am on 8th Nov. I went into labour on the 7th and had her at 11.01am on the 8th. I was induced at 42 weeks with 2nd daughter. My 3rd daughter was 3 days early. The 2nd labour was by far the easiest but she was also the only one in the right position. 1st one 13hrs, 3rd one 10hrs and 2nd who i was induced with 3hrs.

hastingsmum · 28/01/2011 13:56

My sister went for her induction at 42 + something (it was a few years ago, can't remember) and her waters broke just as she reported at reception Wink

MungBeans · 28/01/2011 14:18

I was offered induction at 40+10 which I declined. I was offered again for 40+15 which I accepted.

Rugbylovingmum · 28/01/2011 15:14

I declined an induction until 40+16 but by then I'd had enough. I wanted to give it until 40+14 as I was really hoping for a home birth and then it was the weekend so I told them I'd wait until after that. I had to pop down to the hospital at 40+14 to be checked over but they were happy to wait. I saw a doc again at 40+16 and DD was still very high, 2 sweeps had done nothing and there were no signs I would go into labour - I was totally fed up and went in for the induction. I was in hospital for 3 days and even after 12+ hours on the drip I was only dilated 2cm and DD wasn't engaged so I don't think that I would have gone into labour naturally but I think it is very unusual for that to happen.

The induction (and the eventual c-section) was totally fine so don't worry too much about it but obviously I hope you'll go into labour before that point.

nuttysquirrel · 28/01/2011 19:11

I went 21 days over my due date so that was 43 weeks and then was induced (after a few sweeps and trying every old wives tale!!), two lots of pessaries didn't work, so went for the full-on drip, which wasn't what I had wanted but turned out ok in the end. Was supported moving around for first five hours on the drip, but really wanted an epidural after 5 hours on drip (which the midwife had said may happen as the contractions are mega strong).

Anyhow slept overnight, woken at 8am fully dilated able to feel my legs and pushed out DS1. I really had not wanted to be induced, and was fully supported & monitored by the midwifes and consultant until 3 weeks over my due date. At that point I felt it was the right time to encourage DS out! BTW he really didn't look in any way overcooked..... I am hoping that no 2 due 7th April comes naturally slightly sooner...........

Cosmosis · 30/01/2011 14:42

I went in for first monitoring at 40 + 13 (was told to go daily) and went into labour at 3am 40+14 :)

darleneconnor · 30/01/2011 23:57

I didnt go to induction appointment at 40+10. Wanted to wait until 42 weeks. Went into natural labour and had DS at 40+11.

I think that if I had went for that appointment the hospital environment would probably have scared my body off natural labour and I could have ended up there for days with a possible traumatic birth/section.

LilyBolero · 31/01/2011 10:17

Ds1 was induced at 40+12, although I think I was in pre-labour anyway, just needed 1 lot of the prostin and he was born about 9 hours later.

Dd, really wanted a homebirth, saw consultant at 40+7 who was happy to continue, and see again at 40+14, but she was born on that day (ie 14 days late) at home.

Ds2, born 14+8 at home

Ds3, booked for induction at 40+12, did everything humanly possibly to get him out, mw did sweep etc, he was born 40 +12 at home, 3 hours before I had to phone to go in for induction (brinksmanship).

nineyearoldsarerude · 31/01/2011 10:19

Mine was born 16 days late. I had an appointment at the hospital for that day-can't remember if it was to be induced or just monitored-but luckily got to have my homebirth instead.

TotorosOcarina · 31/01/2011 10:24

I was induced at 42 weeks with DS1.

I hadn't refused induction, thats just when they suggested it.

I had a pessery and was 2cm when that was inserted.

when labour started he was born in 6 hours.

my next 2 labours started naturally on my due date and the day before.

LionsnTigersnBears · 31/01/2011 10:54

I was induced at 40+14 after daily monitoring and a well being scan. Tbh I think it was all the worry about not going into labour that was stopping me going into labour because I arrived to be induced 3 cm dilated, having had contractions every 7 mins for the last 12 hours. At which point they broke my waters and the contractions stopped dead, so I then had to have the flipping drip and monitors and couldn't have the waterbirth I'd wanted. That said DD was born less than 5 hours later so I shouldn't moan too much.
good luck!!!

littleyellowchicken · 31/01/2011 11:28

I am 40+9 today and really don't want to be induced. Hospital could call me in from tomorrow. Will they be OK if I ask them to leave me for at least 2 more days? I don't want to get forgotten about completely but really don't want to go through induction at all.

Cosmosis · 01/02/2011 08:58

You may get asked to go in for monitoring every day or every couple of days, but they can't force you to be induced. When I broached the subject I was terrified, but they were absolutely fine and totally supportive of it. Good luck :)

orangemarzipan · 01/02/2011 16:44

My sister was born 40+16 - this was in the 1960s and doctors seemed less keen on doing inductions.

My nephew was born at 40+21 16 years ago - my sister in law had a consultant who was actually against inductions and preferred to monitor.

I came under loads of pressure and actually felt quite bullied into being induced. I refused to book an induction and went into labour ten days "late". Everything was fine with all of these births.

You're within your rights to refuse induction but might have a bit of a fight on your hands. I made a complaint about the midwife who tried to force me into it but it didn't get very far because I didn't have her name. I think in some ways, the hospital just wants to get you off their books. Maybe it's more sexpensive to offer monitoring, I don't know?

Jackie Chan spent 12 months in the womb apparently...then karate kicked his way out.

ragged · 01/02/2011 17:33

40+10 labour started, baby arrived 40+11.

MWs said he didn't look that "overdue" at all. They would have dated him a week or 2 younger.

Local policy is to induce at 40+10.
I had made up my mind to let the induce me at 42+4 if he didn't come naturally by then. Just felt like a balance I could live with between cited double/triple risk of stillbirth, and my innate reluctance to ever be induced.
