can labour length be hereditary?

Only ask as I found out my Mums 2 labours lasted 4 hours in total from start to finish (although she was induced both times - and it as 4 hours from having a pessary).

Wondered if I (fingers crossed and hopeful emoticon) might have a shorter labour too Wink

not in this family.

my mum had long labours both ending in forceps but then she did have epidural both times.

my first was long (19 hours but no intervention) my second was about 3 hours from established again no intervention so completely different.

No hereditary elements of labour here either

My mw said something after DC2 was born she said those with positive blood can have either long or short births but thoose with negative (like me) always have long births (like me) in her experience. If she was right it could be hereditary to have a long labor anyway but I think that is just one of those anecdotes.

Not in my family either (sorry!!) Mum's labours were long and mine were 6 hours and 3 hours.

Sadly not for me Sad

My mum had 4 of us and her longest labour was 3 hours start to finish (I think she actually sneezed at least one of us out).

Mine lasted 23 hours from start to finish.

My lucky sister has 2 kids and her labours were both about 5/6 hours.

Her and my mum are very similar in build (very slim and boyish) whereas I'm very curvy. Wonder if that has anything to do with it

hmm bunny well, my mum and I are very similar in size and structure, so I'm keeping hopeful on your beard stroking logic Grin

I've always heard that birth isn't really hereditary. Your mum's experience probably won't influence yours. Sorry!

Pootle78 · 27/01/2011 20:24

That's interesting crawling both my mum and sister are negative (as am i) Mum's labours were 6, 4 and 4, sisters was 4, 2 and 2. I was due yesterday so will find out in the next week or so how it goes. On a plus mum, sister and me are similar builds [clutching at straws emotion required, followed by beard stroking!]

My mum and I had pretty much identical first time labours- 30hrs, contractions never really established without hormone drip and ended in forceps and third degree tear/epis. The only difference really was I had a epidural. Thankfully she says the second was better although if and when I will probably go for an ELCS as have been told there's a good chance I would tear in the same way again.

In your case I hope there's something in it...
