Hypothyroid and Childbirth

Does anyone know if thyroid disease makes childbirth high risk? I know early trimester monitoring is important and checking your levels but would there also be childbirth complications?

Jumping the gun I know but as my DH and I are TTC and prepping my levo in the process I can't help to wonder if my underactive thyroid will affect me possibly having a waterbirth. If it's high risk I worry that would not be a safe option.

Thanks for any advice

Hi - Not at all - I am on thyroxin and pregnancy was fine and my baby is now 2 weeks old and did not affect childbirth and as long as your fit and healthy in your pregnancy a water birth should be fine - my friend who is on higher thyroxin than me had a home birth - you will need to get levels checked as soon as you find out your pregnant and then have more blood tests as they may alter your mg to a higher dose... good luck :)

hiya, same as julie and I have 2 kids. Have you had your levels checked recently? When you get bfp make sure the midwife is aware you have an underactive thyroid as they like to watch your levels. Good luck Smile

They will probably put you on Consultant led care so they can monitor growth of baby more closely. Mine was fine though so they transferred me back to midwife led at end and let me try a home water birth. Only stipulation was they advised a managed third stage as higher risks involved if you do bleed but that's not a biggie really.

Good luck ttc. I'm 14 weeks with no. 2 so will see what happens this time around!

This is weird was just about to post something on this I have had an underactive tyroid for about 18 yrs. I have had my DS whom was 5yrs. And had him in hospital I had to be there due to having a consultant to hand. I did have other issues the amniotic fluid had leaked (also disslocated my knee and was healing) and they could not see how so I had to keep going back into hospital to be checked. Im now 30 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and I have moved areas and I have never seen my midwife the notes were a mess and I had to chase everything up. I saw the midwife on Wednesday and she said have you seen the consultant I said no so no she has booked me in ASAP and has written high risk due to thyriod problem on my paperwork. So not sure really. Will see the consultant Feb 10th. Im sure if everything is ok there is no reason not to have your baby where you want so long as your levels are ok and everything else is ok. Hope this helps?

You should be fine

Hwr, wear socks to birth in if you feel the cold...although maybe not in the pool.
