Really fancy waterbirth nor after OBEM

I've never been that interested in having a waterbirth, but after seeing "one born every minute" and the young woman giving birth in water I can't help to think it would be great...

Only I'm almost 39 weeks so there is no time to plan this, unless I want to go to hospital instead of having my planned homebirth.

Maybe I'm just being a bit silly since we've decided we won't try for any more children, so I've sort of lost my chance.

Can't you try and get a pool for your home birth? Not that I have ever had one, I just know that people do do that :) Good Luck!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 20/01/2011 20:01

Look at birth pool in a box? You can probably get next day delivery Smile

thisisyesterday · 20/01/2011 20:02

look on ebay... i picked a pool up from there, second hand but never used.

used it for my 2 homebirths, then sold it for more than I paid to start with!

you can see if there is one local to you perhaps?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/01/2011 20:05

It's not to late at all, have at look at Birth Pool in a Box and La Bassine birthpools. I'm sure you could get next day delivery.

All you'll need is:

pool
hose
access to a hot water supply
seive - for fishing out lumps
pastic sheeting/shower curtain to put around the pool.
Water thermometer

Waterbirths rock Smile

sunndydays · 20/01/2011 20:06

here

sayjay · 20/01/2011 20:09

I had 2 homebirths: one without pool and one with.

The pool was bliss, the whole labour / birth was much more relaxed.

Go for it. Mine was La Bassine (Made in Water). They do next day delivery too, and sell kits with everything you'll need.

Do it! Do it! Do it! Grin

sayjay · 20/01/2011 20:10

if you were north west you could have used mine :(

hastingsmum · 20/01/2011 22:07

Thank you for your encouragement, I might just have a little look then if you all think I still have time, lol
Thanks for the link sunnydays

I got mine from Boots, it arrived really quickly and was great. I have also heard of people using the bath - you can block up the overflow with blu-tack to make it deeper. Good luck!

birth pool in a box.... go go go get one..or similar.
It's not too late. Find some good support and go for it. I did a w.birth at home 2yrs ago. Wouldn't have swapped it for the world, in fact I'd do it again in a heartbeat

homebirthmummy · 21/01/2011 22:08

Birth pool in a box are super super fast at delivering their pools.

There may even be someone locally who hires them? I have heard that some private antenatal teachers hire them, as do some midwives.

Go for it!!!

hastingsmum · 21/01/2011 23:36

I've been searching the internet all evening for the best deal now, lol. Had a look at Boots and ebay as well just not quite decided which is the best offer for me. I think it's probably best to buy rather than hire, I'm sure baby will be later than due date but don't wanna gamble so would need to hire for a long period, probably cheaper to buy and then resell it.

I feel so excited about this now. Had MW here today to do the homebirth plan and it was the first thing she asked, if I'd considered water. Wink

Do you have a hb support group locally? They might have contacts for a borrow or hire.

Hi, I don't know if there is a HB support group here. I'm in Hastings, East Sussex.

FessaEst, our bath is on the top floor and I can't imagine walking all the way up there with contractions, also doubt the MWs would love the idea, otherwise that would have been a great idea.

Hi Hastings! :) I too was having this dilemma / wobble a couple of weeks ago. My issue is that I'm in a flat and it has been sold (move out end of Feb) so apart from space & potential weight issues(!) I got lots of great feedback on here I have decided to stick with the bath. Def not as good as a birthing pool but I hope it will do the job for at least some of my labour! (FessaEst great idea about blocking overflow!). Anyway, I think it sounds like a great idea for you and you seem to have lots of options for a fast delivery. I've never heard anything bad said about birth pools & water birth so I'm sure you won't regret your decision! Good luck!

mungogerry · 22/01/2011 20:00

It is definitely worth it!

hastingsmum · 22/01/2011 22:33

Thank you all, I have now bought one off ebay (unused) and am arranging to pick it up tomorrow.

DH hasn't warmed to the idea of a birth pool yet, he just keeps talking about how difficult a pool will be to empty, lol.

OP posts:
ascouser · 23/01/2011 01:45

just a thing to add here re emptying...

I was upstairs by the time this was happening (thankfully). DP said it did stink a bit when the water began to move... cringing now thinking about what was in that water and who saw the remnents seeing as a few family members come on over to the house in the first hour post birth! Blush
Anyway. You may get a pump with the pool or you may have one of those 'stand on with your feet and push and pull up and down ones'. I'm sure DP used this, in reverse, as it were with a length of hose fed out side into the garden to begin the 'suck' of the water and it drained this way. The liner went in the bin.

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2011 20:49

we had a pump for emptying it, just attach hose, stick it out the window and let it go!
