Transverse babies

Does anyone have any experience of having a transverse baby and then going on to have another baby? My third baby was transverse at 38 weeks, though after a week in hospital (due to the position being dangerous in case the cord fell out) the baby moved and I was induced and had a straightforward birth.

I am anxious that if I was to have another baby it would be transverse from the word go and lead to lots of complications in the pregnancy.. Something that with three other little ones, I just couldn't risk.

I was told by a midwife that my stomach muscles weren't very strong and I had a "shelf". I have no idea why this is or if it's an implication of having had three pregnancies.

Any words of wisdom would be very welcome! Many thanks.

I am currently 40weeks and 7 today and just got out of hospital yesterday after spending the last three weeks in hospital with an unstable transverse lie baby. This is baby no.5 and I had the same thing with no.4. With dc4 she turned head down at 40wks exactly, I got out of hospital after she was "stable" head down for a couple of days and then went into labour naturally at 40+4. She was born in a couple of hrs no complications.

This time I have been in hospital since 38wks as a precaution due to risk of cord prolapse if my waters were to break. I have been on a roller coaster ride varying from some days practically begging for a c-section just to be able to go home, as the stress of having 4 other children at home (7,5,3 and 16mths) being cared for by DH and an army of helpers (I am so lucky to have had mum, in-laws, sisters, friends etc. to call on) has been terrible. Other days I was sure that if given time the baby would go head down and I could avoid a section as after 4 normal deliveries and a full house to look after when I go home that was the last thing i wanted.

As it happened I went with my consultants advice and waited and baby did turn at 40 wks. It remained a bit unstable for a few days but consultant was eventually happy to let me home yesterday. Why he didnt induce me rather than let me home is that the head is still very high and so he didnt want to risk inducing me or breaking my waters in case baby decided to somersault again!! A few more days will give baby a chance to get on down there a bit more!! The way I see it now is I've waited this long another few days wont make any difference and at least I'm at home.

The reasons I have been given for the transverse lie is multiple babies close together, also my babies have all been big from 9'1 to 10'8 so tummy muscles totally stretched. The fact that my 4th baby was transverse meant the chances of a subsequent baby would be too.
Sorry this has probably got a little long and confusing but when I saw your post just wanted to reply as am going through this at the minute.

Wow Adie, thanks for your reply. I totally know where you're coming from. What a pain that you couldn't be induced in a way? But can see what the consultant means and it's great that the baby is in a good position now and stable. Really interesting to read that a similar situation happened to you.

It sounds like you are having great care there and fantastic that you have lots of help with your four others.

I wasn't allowed out of hospital as my baby was so unsettled and spinning all over the place. She was worth every bit of worry though and I think you forget all the anxious bits once you finally get to meet the baby.

Wishing you lots of luck and hope your new baby will be with you very soon. All the best.

DD (dc1) was transverse, but turned with ECV on my induction date (was induced at 34+4 due to pre-elampsia). She ended up being an NVD.

DS1 and DS2 were head down all the way through, and normal deliveries (had ventouse for DS2 but only cos his head was huge).

Am 40+5 with DC4, and he's head down too.
