SIL gave birth there in November, and had nothing but good things to say about it.

Lulumaam · 17/01/2011 19:38

not personally but from friends and other doulas, I hear good things. If you are near to Ormskirk , I have a lot of experience with the unit there which is great....

Darnsarfupnorf · 17/01/2011 19:47

I've had 1 baby there, 1 stint of post-natal care, loads of ante-natal care and some gynae stuff, some obstetrics stuff and I've been v happy with them. It's a big hospital, though, so there are bound to be some unhappy customers Smile. I've heard v good things about Ormskirk, too.

jonicomelately · 17/01/2011 22:16

Go for Ormskirk if you can Smile

brokeoven · 17/01/2011 22:16

im at the mc clinic there, so far so good, vvvv knowledgable and friendly.

jonicomelately · 17/01/2011 22:24

Just realised how near the birth you are.
The Women's is fine and very good in many respects.
I just think Ormskirk is outstanding Smile

Check out birthchoiceuk.co.uk you can find all the stats about LWH (and every other maternity unit). You can also look at the quality care commissions survey which shows what women think of the unit.

The birth pool there is awesome, however the MLU is really understaffed and they have closed all the private postnatal rooms, so either you go home after birth or onto the windowless wards.
As with all hospitals the beds dominate the rooms but they can be moved to create more space. Like all units it has it's pros and cons.

As the community midwives are so amazing by comparison the hospital ones are not as good, your birth partner may need to use their voice, but that's that same wherever you go!

If you want to contact me off list I would be happy to answer any questions about the unit.

thanks for the help guys :)

homebirthmummy are there no private rooms at all? thanks for the link ill have a look at that now :) im wanting a water birth but is there only the one pool? im fairly flexible with my birth plan but id really like at least part of the labour/birth in the pool Confused

thanks again :)

The jeff cote wing has been closed. I heard one mw say it wasn't needed as all low risk women will just go home anyone else will go to the delightful ward. What about all those low risk women who just want a bit if extra support. It's ridiculous.

There is only one pool/chill out room and it's great, its really under used aswell. However recently a friend was told she could use the pool but not birth in it due to staffing issues. Again, ridiculous.

Liverpool NCT have started running waterbirth workshops, might be worth a look?

The birthchoice uk site is really great at finding out all the stats.

All the community teams have pools for homebirths. You get one midwife just for you too! (two for the second stage!)
I run a monthly homebirth support group in Liverpool, very informal and friendly, PM me anyone interested in coming (in Aigburth, ne4ar Lark Lane, next one evening of Feb 15th)

Hi, just came across this post. I had my first baby in 2008 at lwh and had a fantastic waterbirth, and then spent the night on the jeff cote wing. Due my 2nd in june and really want another waterbirth. I am so dissapointed that some ppl arnt able to have one due to staffing, i think i would actually cry.

I have been considering a home waterbirth as its something i really want and dont want to get to the hosp to be told i cant use the pool. If anyone has any info on homebirths i would be very grateful :)

homebirthmummy · 22/01/2011 11:38

Go for it Becky!!

I had a home birth in Liverpool and it was the greatest experiences of my life! The midwives are in a different league to those at LWH, they are so chilled and hands off and really supportive.

The HOM is really pro homebirth also and is meant to be doing a conference on homebirths this year, he has provided 10 pools (I think) to the community midwives in which you can hire.

You will be given all the kit and a contact sheet of which midwives are in duty around the time you are due, when you go into labour you give them a call. They will come out to you, and will either stay if things are progressing nicely, or will call back later if they feel you are in the early stages. However (unlike at hospital), when you are in established labour they are with you the whole time, watching, massaging, supporting you and partner etc.
Your MW will not go off duty and even if you transfer into hospital she will come with you. A second midwife will arrive shortly before the birth of your baby.

They will then step into another room and leave you to have some nice bonding time, mine made tea and toast for me and DH!

They will do all the checks on you and baby and after a couple of hours will go and leave you to rest. The MW are trained to do the newborn check, so they will come the next day to do that.

I have to take my hats off to the community MW here, they are absolutely brilliant.

If you have any questions just shout!!
