Went for my 38 week growth scan today and yet again all measurements above 95th centile with estimated weight today of 9lb 30z was told I need to see a consultant asap best they can offer is next monday due to over booking from xmas backlog - also babies left kidney looked dialited so will need a scan and perhaps antibiotics - apparently really common and nothing to worry about although still worried - This is my 2nd dc 1st 7.8 at 39 weeks and was really hoping for natrual birth last time epidrual and ventose leaving me bad tear which got infected twice - I have been seeing a hypnobirther and reflexologist and was positive, excited...now I feel sick and am dreading the whole thing just keep crying - anyone have postive big baby stories to share to try and restore some excitementplease posting in pregnancy and chilbirth :)

Scans often come up miles bigger than the actual baby size (my doctor friend said always). It's not the weight so much as the shape - my babies were all long skinnies but quite high weights because of their length. You really can do it - lots of people give birth without intervention to bigger babies than that although I know it must be worrying for you. A midwife will be able to discuss with you your options.

Separately, the kidney thing gets diagnosed a lot as well. Your baby will be scanned within 24 hours of birth and they will be able to tell if there is problem or not (even if there is, it's only a question of antibiotics until they scan again a couple of weeks later when it will probably have self-corrected so while not ideal, nothing to get worried about). My son was diagnosed with it from 20-week scan onwards but was fine at birth.

My second was 9lbs 7oz and was easier to deliver than my first who was (a bit!) smaller. You can do it!

Second labours tend to be easier and quicker regardless of the baby's size so don't worry

hi there, my second labour was totally different to my first. DS was nearly 9lb (i am petite so this was a huge surprise, so to speak) and a nightmare long process, culiminating in an episiotomy and several ventouse attempts. I have just given birth to a daughter, who was much smaller (7lb3oz) and arrived in less than two hours Shock - literally no time for the epidural i'd planned. If someone had told me i would give birth in two hours (DS took over 30hrs from first contraction to appearing.) I would never, ever have believed them.
So, the point of my message is your second labour will very likely be much, much easier than your first, even though the baby is big. secondly, 9lb3oz is large but not that large.
obviously if you are really freaked you could request a c-section, but i think it won't be nearly as bad as you fear this time.

First of all remember that scans can be incredibly inaccurate especially with big babies. Secondly I am a firm believer that providing you don't have gestational diabetes you will produce a baby the right size for you and it can be done, I am living proof!!

DS1 - born at 39 weeks, weight 9lb15, episiotomy, 13.5hr labour

DS2 - born at 40 weeks, weight 10lb7, small tear, no stitches needed, 2.5hr labour

DD1 - born 12 days overdue (now 6 weeks old), weight 11lb11.5oz, no tears, 1hr40min labour!!!

I can honestly say that the 2nd and 3rd labours were much, much easier than the 1st, although I won't be doing it again! Good Luck

keep your chin up julie! like everyone said second labours tend to be quicker. also although scans can be valuable they can be quite inaccurate and babies are extremely difficult to measure at term due to sometimes being so engaged in the pelvis!

I had a 9lb 9oz baby with no pain. Born at home at 43 weeks. Most magical experience of my life. You CAN do it!
