birthmarks

Anyone know about different types of birth/pressure marks?

Have just had DS2 and he's got quite a big birthmark on his forehead and on his top lip.

I wouldn't have thought much of it (DS1 had them both and they faded) but these have been commented on by a couple of MWs and I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about them (i.e. which ones stay and whichones fade etc).

Not that it matters much - more curious than anything.

DD 'stork beak' on her forehead between eyes and 'angel kisses' at the inner corners of her eyes whichwere all basically red marks. she is 9 months now and unless she is really upset and crying you cannot see them.

DS has a flat light brown mark on his leg, a bit like a big freckle. I noticed it when he was a day or two old and it's still there at 2.8 yrs.

I'm not sure about marks on his face - he had bruised swollen cheeks from forceps but I didn't notice forehead and lip marks.

DD2 had a large flat red birthmark on her left chest and it runs all around to her back and down her left arm. According to the dermo they should fade by the time she is 18mo she also has stork bite on the back of her neck. The stork mark is there but will be hidden by her hair and has faded we are still waiting for her body one to fade, we have been advised no sun on it at all as it thickens the skin and should she need laser treatment further down the line it will be more difficult to fade it.

I've managed to brand all 4 dcs....DS1 had huge strawberry naevus (raised red birthmark) on his back - has faded to silver scar but thats only because it bled and got infected. DD1 had one in her hair - gone now shes 5, DS2 had tiny one on end of his nose - kept thinking he had a bloody nose but went by 8mths and DD2 has one about size of 5p and very raised right between her eyes at the bridge of her nose - shes 18mths now and its getting lighter and should be gone by the time she starts school - we call it her "third eye"! hth

Thanks for all your posts.

I know there's not a huge amount you can do about them - and like I say, it's not such a big deal. When I see the GP next I'll ask - these ones don't seem to be raised or anything. He seems to have them at the base of his head too - so I think they must be ones that happen in delivery.

I remember being surprised how many babies do have birthmarks. In one baby group I went to there were five babies all with the same sort of birthmark - a large raised red fleshy spot. One poor boy had one right in the middle of his forehead.

I assume they either disappear naturally or are surgically removed as I've never noticed an adult with such a mark.

I have a birth mark on my fore head, right hand side, it is dark brown (and hairy, although I trim it with scissors), it is about the size of a 1p piece.

My mum was told it would fade as I got older, it hasn't at all (am now 38). However, it doesn't really bother me, my hair tends to cover it anyway.

Kids seem to refer to me as the lady with the brown spot (bless them).

They did say that I could have it removed, but that the scar would be just as noticable as the mark ! Didn't seem much point.
