Worried about a friend who's been induced.

Thought someone on here my have some thoughts to calm my fears. A good friend is 40+13 with her first baby and went in on Sunday morning for induction. I haven't heard from her since and I know she would contact us fairly high up the list, we are good friends. Both of my children have been early so I have no experience of induction. Is it normal for it to take this long? I am creating all sorts of horrible scenarios in my head of all the awful things that could have happened. I have tried to text her but got no answer, she probably hasn't got her phone on anyway. I guess I just want some reassurance that induction can take this long, nearly 36 hours now?

yes, it can easily take this long as it doesn't always work first time anyway.

MoonUnitAlpha · 03/01/2011 17:15

I had a non-induced labour of 30 hours, so I'm sure an induction can take longer. Plus we were both exhausted afterwards and not up to calling friends.

IAmReallyFabNow · 03/01/2011 17:16

I have no knowledge or experience of induction and just wanted to say I hope everything is okay and you have a new baby to cuddle soon.

lucy101 · 03/01/2011 17:33

Mine took days... but however good a friend she is perhaps she wants some time alone with the baby if she has had it. You have texted her so just leave it at that. I am sure she will be in touch in her own time.

I really don't expect texts straight away, don't get me wrong!! I'm just a terrible worrier! Df had a miscarriage early last year and it really tore her apart. I am just so desperate for her to have her little baby to cuddle. She will be such a lovely Mummy and I guess I'm just impatient too! Thanks to those who reassured me re timings. I have had several friends who have been induced and it didn't work first time so I know I'm probably panicking unnecessarily.

I was induced and absolutely nothing happened the first day. I had DD at 17.10 on day 2. Don't worry- your friend is in good hands.

mrsgboring · 03/01/2011 20:31

If the ward is busy they won't even start the induction on schedule. She could well still be calling in every four hours wondering if there's a bed for her, or stuck between two stages (I had this once - gel didn't work, but I had to have a room on Delivery Suite for them to break waters and do synto. They didn't have one so I was sent to "walk around". For five hours. At night.)

I tell my friends everything all the time, but when it came to this (have a fairly traumatic obstetric history) I went to ground and communicated with no-one.

I was induced on a Sunday night and baby was born early hours of Wednesday....like others have said it can take a long time!

Hulababy · 03/01/2011 20:50

Yes, probably just taking a while. My induction took 50 hours before having a c section, and was in for a couple of hours prior to initial induction gel too, so easily could be just taking a long time.

VickstaS · 03/01/2011 20:52

I was induced and it took >48h. We didn't get round to announcng it until that evening what with one thing or another. So don't worry yet.

FoxyRevenger · 03/01/2011 21:02

I was induced at it took 49 hours.

Also, if she has just got onto the ward and they have lots of women already in labour they will hold off on getting her started until they are quieter.

I went into hospital Friday am for an induction, and did not have my waters broken until the Sunday pm. Friday and Saturday were spent enduring trying out different pessaries and gels, none of which worked, and all day Sunday was spent waiting for a room to be freed up for me in the Delivery Suite. I'm sure your friend will be in touch soon, induction is not necessarily a quick process!

AbbyLou · 03/01/2011 22:28

Oh thanks so much for those stories, you have really set my mind at rest. I will turn my phone off in a few minutes to go to bed and hopefully - for her sake - there will be a lovely announcement in the morning.

Oh yes. Have heard of 4/5 days

mrsgboring · 04/01/2011 16:30

OP you will come back and tell us when you have some news won't you? I want to know now!

Mumcah · 04/01/2011 20:48

Bumping for news!

Ewe · 04/01/2011 20:51

I started being induced on Thursday lunchtime and didn't have baby until Sunday morning, it can take a while!

Hope baby has arrived/is well on his/her way!

katster37 · 04/01/2011 21:10

I have heard of inductions taking the best part of a week. I hope your friend's doesn't though, and that she is cuddling her new baby right now.
