induction???

I am now 40+10 and have turned down an induction as I really regretted it last time and badly want to do it on my own. I'm getting a little nervous that I might put the baby at risk now though. Has anyone got any good/bad stories to tell me about the condition of the baby? I'm going to the hospital on Tuesday for monitoring. What tests will they do? How often will they want me back? I've got to weigh up the hassle of going back there every couple of days and leaving ds1. What should I do?

I went 2 weeks over with DS - he arrived 2 days before induction was scheduled. All fine just a bit wrinkly and peely

I had some monitoring - I went in twice and sat down with a blood pressure monitor on and also a belt on that measures your contractions (if any!) and the babies heartbeat. Did that for about 20-30 mins and they can see how the baby is doing etc

I was 2 weeks over with second baby and was induced - she was fine at 15 days over.
Sorry, don't know about tests etc.

Have you tried the hot curry/bumpy car ride and sex route to bring on the baby? Obviously, not all at the same time!

Berrie

I would have turned down induction for my 2nd had it got to that point. Although technically spking my DD wasnt induced - i was 40 + 13 and went in on the morning to be induced but the monitoring equipment said i was already in early labour & 3cms so they waited for it to start hurting. When it did 8 hours later - still 3cms. Broke my waters - 3 hours later - still 3cms - epidural & Oxytocin etc - fully dilated in 3 hours but ended up pushing for nearly 3 hours and having ventouse so thats why i didnt want induction. Wanted to be left to it.

HOWEVER, with my DS this time round my BP started to go up and the 3 weeks leading up the kept threatening induction and i was having monitoring every day/other day which involved sitting on the CTG monitor which measures babys heartbeat and if you are having contractions, your BP, urine and possibly bloods too.

Its true it was a total PITA having my DD to look after and had to get people to baby sit while i went back and forth because the procedures at the hospital at the time meant i had to stay for results but would be kept waiting up to 7 hours for these. I was kept in a couple of times. When they first checked me to see if i could be induced i wasnt ready. The examination hurt so much though i think it helped to kick start things. When they finally kept me in again a couple of days later because my levels were all too high I went into labour on my own again overnight(thought i had wind and bad braxton hicks!) and only needed my waters breaking the next day to hurry things a long a little (not that it really needed it). He was born 5 days early.

Sorry for the long post - anyway - i wouldnt want to leave it to go past 3 weeks over personally and it is wise to go for very regular checks if you do leave it. My DD was fine when she was born - no problems at all - just very wrinkly and dry peely skin.

Thanks
Yes we have tried one or two things, the midwife called it hot curry/hot partner which made us giggle. Actually I couldn't stomach the curry at the moment as indigestion so bad!

i was overdue with both my girls 1st(now 3) was over 2weeks as they say were i am that the longest they let you go overdue
with my 2nd daughter(now 9mths) i was also induced at only 1 day overdue this was due to my blood being at a good level as i was in hospital for 2 week nearly dead due 2 dangerously low blood presser could of bleed 2 dead

lets just hope the baby come soon as its horriable waiting longer as you have already had 2 wait for 40weeks

laurenholly · 25/09/2005 23:10

hi vickie i also had a ventouse with my 1st baby which isnt nice is it

Hi - I am writing a dissertation on this very topic. The evidence is not very conclusive but the worst case senario is that for every 500 women they induce for being post dates one baby's life is saved. The figure is likely to be closer to 1 for every thousand or even more. It is also possible that being induced for this reason reduces your chance of having a caesarean.

The testing they are likely to do is a CTG - where they monitor the baby's heartbeat - and an ultrasound scan where they measure the amniotic fluid. If there is less fluid than expected they will advise you to go for the induction. I think they will want you back every two days but am not sure.

My heart tells me that it is better to wait for labour to start spontaneously but the available evidence suggests it is better to be induced. There hasn't however been much research on how women find the induction experience. You have been through it once so you know what you didn't like about it. However, if you have had a baby before induction is usually easier and quicker so might be a better experience.

fingers crossed that you will go into labour tonight and not have to make any decisions

How are you getting on, Berrie?

Berrie · 27/09/2005 16:49

Thanks for asking and for all your replies!
We went in this morning and they took a trace of the b's heartbeat which was good. The SHO talked a lot about the risk of stillbirth using your statistics Nettee. She made me feel quite selfish about wanting to wait when we currently have a healthy baby. My husband was really worried by it all and we agreed to go back this afternoon for an induction however when we rang to check at 2pm they were really busy and we are now waiting to ring again at five to see if they can fit us in. If I am to be induced I'd rather not have it done when they're snowed under but today was apparantly the best day they had this week in terms of booking for an induction. I'd rather have a good night's sleep than labour all through the night so we'll see! I suppose I'd rather regret agreeing to an induction than regret anything more serious.

Fingers crossed for five then, Berrie.

Berrie · 27/09/2005 19:18

Too busy tonight apparantly. I'm pleased but having frightened my husband about this horrible risk he now feels like they won't act to diminish the risk. We're to ring again at 7.30am!

What a shame you are now feeling so worried Nettee. If it is any consolation, I have seen many women go into labour at 42 weeks with no problems at all. Whilst there are recommendations regarding induction at 40+10, it is acknowledged that if the baby is fine then induction can waittill 42 weeks and in some cases beyond that. Chill tonight with a glass of wine and have a bit of 'nooky'. Hopefully that will get you going

Berrie · 27/09/2005 21:33

That'll cheer him up!!!

bump

Don't know if you'll see this as it's been a few weeks, you know how time switches to baby time afterwards!
Well after my last post I was due to ring at 7.30am to see iof they'd have us but at 3am I started to have contractions. I was so pleased! The hospital is some way away and in the morning as it was coming up to rush hour I rang in to say that I was having contractions 10 mins apart. They initially said to wait but when I explained about the traffic said to come in. They were really busy. My contractions had diminished a bit and the consultant said it would be best to break my waters as the prostaglandins might cause more pain because things had already got going. Unfortunatly I was not dilated enough so I had the gel then waited the six hours before being checked again. I had a lovely baby girl at 6.10pm. She popped out after only eight minutes of pushing I was so surprised! I was expecting hours of pushing! She'd had the chord round her neck so was whisked away to the sound of the emergency buzzer and later developed an infection (they didn't get the intravenous antibiotics for GBS in early enough so we had to stay in for a week but everything is fine now.)
Thanks for asking!
