My sil went into early labour in the night (28 weeks) and gave birth to a little boy this morning, after an extrememly worrying few hours for us all (I'm 38 weeks pregnant myself and just felt incredibly guilty the whole time we were waiting!). He is breathing on his own and has been described as as lusty, fiesty baby by the hospital and they have said that he has every chance of being fine. Bit long winded but I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere we can get some little clothes suitable for him. Sil is down in Cornwall and we are in the MIdlands and we feel a bit helpless stuck up here, and I just thought that if I could at least find somewhere sil can get some little clothes for him or SOMETHING I might feel a bit useful.

Mothercare do this set, but it's out of stock on the website. The store might have it - you could ring to check?

Your nephew sounds like a fighter - will be thinking of you xxxxxx

I'm sure Boots now do some clothes for very small babies. You might be able to get lots in their ongoing sale too.

Just to second mothercare - they do loads in their early baby size (up to 5 lbs) and quite a bit I think in smaller than that. Good luck to your sister and nephew....

Glad the boy is doing well...Mothercare do clothes for small babies, but im not sure they will start from 2lb but you can have a look. Adams do have some stuff but not much.

I agree with boots & mothercare. How about dolls clothes..??? I know places like Toys R us do lovely dolls clothes which will be the right size for baby. Sounds mad but its worth a try.
BTW I know someone who had a little boy at 28 weeks (in fact due to problems found during a scan she was advised to terminate ..she decided to be induced as she couldn't let him go like that.) he was born at 28 weeks and is now around 7 months old and is doing well. Little ones can be such fighters..Thinking nice postive thoughts and hope all goes well.

Just a quickie, SCBU don't like baby clothes on premmies because they like to keep an eye on the breathing and colour of the baby. So any tiny clothes might not fit by the time your sister is allowed to dress her son, so go for 3-5lb clothes.

bramblina · 25/09/2005 18:23

My step sister was prem, weighed just under 2lb and her mum dressed her in doll's clothes for the first 3 months. Hope he's doing well, lots of luck xx

Hi

My son was 2lb, 2oz when born in April, 10 weeks early. While your sil's baby is still in an incubator he won't be able to wear clothes, it'll just be a nappy but once he's big enough to move to a cot then he'll be able to be dressed. Mothercare do the best clothes for premmies - their 3lb size were the only ones that fitted Charlie when we started dressing him. Other stores do supposed 3lb sizes, but we found that they were all way too big. In particular Mothercare have developed a special range of baby clothes for premmies including wraparound vests, we were given some and found them very useful during our first scared attempts at dressing Charlie.

Also wanted to send Best Wishes to your family - I know exactly what you're going through, and the hospital message is very positive. Let me know if you have any other questions.

CGMum

PS, should say Charlie is now 12lbs, has been home for 14 weeks and is doing very well!

I noticed that our boots has all the early baby clothes at massive redcutions, not sure if they are discontinuing them, but they had little fleecy trousers and cardigans, babygros and nighties from 2lb upwards for 50p!

Following on from what sparklymieow said, I have a friend who works in scbu & someone who's dd was in about 4 months ago & they both advised me of the clothes issue & the fact that they did dress babies in clothes. Sorry to contradict !

jamboure · 28/09/2005 20:50

Hope baby is doing well.

My twins were 29 weeker 1 was 2lb13 and other 2lb 14.5 in all honesty he wont be wearing much for a while.

Mine were in hospital for 8 weeks I too was desperate to dress them in wee clothes, there are prem clothes available but can be pricey, we bouight a lot of tiny baby from asda george even they were too big lol

MOthercare have a good range too for prem baby but at that size they were still WAY to big

waterfalls · 28/09/2005 20:53

Dolls clothes are perfect, but if you are still stuck, mothercare vouchers will be just as usefull.

banthambabe · 28/09/2005 20:58

HI cubby, My ds was born at 4lb6 so bigger than your nephew but was in the neonatal unit at truro, is that where they are, if so they were fantastic, not only with him but with us. Talking with other parents they all felt the same. He sounds like a fighter so I'm sure will be fine. We found mothercare clothes were the best at sizing and I know others felt the same and as he gets bigger they have most of there range in early baby clothes. Good luck with your labour and expect emotions to be all over the place. tell your sister in law to go easy on yourself as it is easy to over do it!

babyonboard · 28/09/2005 21:03

Just to add..my gran and the women from her knitting group send regular bundles to the local scbu units, which I find lovely..must realy help prents that are spending all their time with the baby and so don't want to go out looking for clothes..

kid · 28/09/2005 21:05

I recently crocheted a cardigan for my friends premature baby. I also did her a hat, a pair of booties. I've never attempted making outfits like that, I usually stick to ponchos. I taught myself how to crochet too so I'm very pleased with myself!

babyonboard · 28/09/2005 21:40

kid..that's great! I thought it was lovely how my grans group spent all that time for people they will never even meet.
I have not done much as I am bad at knitting, but mean to teach myself, but thought I would pass on some of the blankets and things I have made (except the ones I have done and embroidered especially for the tot to keep)

dandycandyjellybean · 01/10/2005 12:32

Just thought I would add a quick update. Exactly one week after baby Daniel arrived so very unexpectedly, he is off the ventilator, and even off the oxygen spur and doing incredibly well!! In the end I just sent a Mothercare voucher, as I really wasn't sure how things stood with clothing and I figured that there must be lots of things that they hadn't had time to get before he arrived. They are limited to a relatively short visit every day as they live quite a long way from the hospital, so I thought that now things are a lot more positive sil might enjoy some retail therapy. Thanks for all your input though.
