Snow!!!!

I am due tomorrow and have to admit I am getting a little apprehensive about the possibility of snow. The last time we had snow where i live we were stuck in the house for four days, we could not even get to the end of the road. Everyone keeps joking i could end up with a home birth, the more they mention it the more I worry.

I have severe SPD and epilepsy so I am classed as a higher risk pregnancy, I wanted a water birth at home but the consultant would not even entertain it.

I really do not fancy my DH and four year old as my only birth partners!!!!!!

Not much point to this thread but i needed to mention it as if i did in RL everyone would start to joke about it even more, which with my family is hard!!!!!

After last year, we'd always meant to get snow chains for this winter. With the weather forecast DH got them yesterday, just in case (I'm 37+1). If you haven't got any, I'd get them. That way you should at least be able to get to a main road that's been gritted where an ambulance could meet you if needed.

Was your last child on time? Keep an eye on the weather. I know someone who stayed at the local B&B next to the hospital for two nights because she lived rurally - good job too, she went into labour on the second night and there was no way she'd have made it to the hospital in the snow.

Do you have an air ambulance in your area? If the weather is really bad and you've gone into labour, call the emergency services and let them worry about getting you to hospital or a midwife/paramedic to you.

I'm due in Jan with a high risk preganancy and although the hospital is only 30 mins away, in mild snow it's over and hour and a half - I know this as it's near my work and that's how long it took this morning in mild snow. DH is having kittens about him delivering DD2 in a snow drift by the side of the A1 in Northumberland.

I think everyone worries about an unplanned home birth at some point for some reason or other. It probably won't happen, but if it looks like it, really let someone else worry about getting to you.. I would say home is better than stuck in the car birth!

Hope the snow melts where you are and you get a clear run and the birth you want.

thanks, i was worried i was being over dramatic (have a slight tendency according to the DH Smile). Think i will mention the snow chains to him.

Last year my DH and I were stranded over night on one of the main roads in Suffolk due to snow - this was December and we were coming back from a wedding - it was a nightmare, so I know how you feel.

We were joking that our baby will probably decide to come as soon as the snow begins to fall here which it is meant to do today. I am overdue and it makes me a bit nervous.

totally understand how you feel if you live down an isolated road. Agree with others that it would be a good idea to get snow chains and definitely put a spade in the boot of the car. Very necessary.

And call the emergency services early if you think labour is happening and the snow is heavy and you can't get out.. Better they get there early
