Hello all!

Been researching private maternity care as would like to have delivery only privately, but prices still seem extortionate in London!

Anybody have any advice/experience on being able to have a private delivery for 6k/less??

Thanks
Kim

Sorry. Wish there was.

Although you could, if you are low risk, opt for a midwife centre. Think there is one in Surrey, privately and I think that would be £7k - £8k.

Private hospitals and delivery, even if you book late, say 28 weeks, will still set you back about £9k and that is if all goes well and you go home within 24hrs.

Wish there was such an option....

Have a japanese friend and she isn't entitled to nhs treatment but is pregnant. She could have a delivery in an nhs hospital but they would charge her £7k for it.

Thanks skandi, yep, those are the lowest figures I've been coming across so far :(

Portland hospital has an option for midwife-led care from about 30 weeks, which comes out to about £7k including 2 nights stay. However the cost will go up if you have complications, an epidural, an EMCS, additional nights in hospital, NICU for baby, etc. Some of the NHS hospitals (C&W, St Mary's, St Thomas) may also have midwife-led options in their private wings, you can check directly with them, and additional costs would be lower if baby needs NICU etc because covered by NHS. Don't think £6k or less exists in London, unless your insurance covers it.

Thanks pinkpeony!

Hi Sunshine Bean,
I had my DD privately last year - private consultant throughout pregnancy all the way to private delivery at Queen Charlotte at Hammersmith and all together it cost me five and a half grand. If I remember correctly the hospital room, consultant on hand, anaesthetist only came to about £2900. Have you checked Queen Charlottes? My Consultant was Mr McCarthy. Good luck. Grin

Thanks sugargirl1

I have looked into it and Mr McCarthy charges £4700 for care throughout pregnancy and delivery, Queen Charlotte's charge £1880 for the first night and £600 per night therafter and anaesthetic fee £450, so you were very lucky indeed!

It's true Sunshine Bean - either that or pregnancy brain strikes again and I'm totally mis-remembering!!! Smile Does Queen Charlotte's allow only private delivery so you wouldn't have to pay for Mr M's consultant fee throughout. Sorry if this is all stuff you've already looked into.

Home birth with private midwife.

Lol sugargirl1, don't apologise Wink ! Yeah, looked into it, it's £3000 for delivery only. Hrmph!

My first delivery was midwife lead at St Thomas' it was 4 years ago, but I'm sure that would have been about 6-7,000. However, I ended up having a placental abruption, needing a consultant extra stay etc.... and it ended up consting well over 10.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 25/11/2010 15:38

We were looking to go private at St Thomas'. Unfortunately they don't offer midwife led care anymore, so costs would be £2500 for a normal delivery, £650 for an epidural, £200 extra if forcepts etc required, and £690 per night for the room. The consultant fees are £4000

So if all went perfectly without epidural or intervention, you'd be looking at about £6500 minimum.
