anyone eaten/drunk during labour and NOT been sick?

I know this is a really odd question to ask, but you see I have a really bad phobia of being sick. Pregnancy so far has been a living nightmare for me as I've had really bad pg nausea (GP sais it's sort of HG but with just nausea, not being sick).

I didn't even know before I got pg that people could be sick during labour and now I find something else to be worried about.

Just wondering how many of you ate/drank during labour but didn't get any sensation of feeling or being sick or if it's inevitable?

I'm the sort of person that has crazy blood sugar levels so know if it's possible to eat and I feel up to it in labour, I'll be better off as I'll feel much better eating, but I don't want to make myself sick Confused

Vomited my way through pregnancy (last time, 30 something weeks) but nothing during childbirth. Ate bananas, cereal bars and drank a sea of water.

Good luck.

With respect, people saying "you probably won't care" clearly don't suffer from emetophobia.

Angels - I've been told that they can run an IV with hydration and anti-emetics during labour for people like us - although you wouldn't be able to move around as much as without one, obviously.

Quenelle · 23/11/2010 16:01

Yes. I had half a fig roll and sipped some water and wasn't sick.

Was flipping starving afterwards though. It's true what they say, it IS the best tea and toast you'll ever eat.

Jareth · 23/11/2010 16:02

Yep, absolutely stuffed my face while in labour, loads of water and lucozade tablets too, and wasn't sick.

SpringHeeledJack · 23/11/2010 16:14

I am, I think, borderline phobic about being sick- am in two minds about posting this as I don't want to worry you...

I ate nothing in labour and was sick anyway but under the circumstances it didn't bother me at all. I was on the maternity ward, and the cow midwife on duty had told me, 10 minutes earlier, that I wasn't actually in labour Hmm. When I threw up, a midwife from the labour ward who happened to be passing whisked me down there quick- and I had ds about 20 minutes later Smile- it did seem to move things along and I really didn't have time to get upset about it

Thanks paigeturner. I've been told I can have an antiemetic injection in hospital (just hope they keep their word on that!) but I still worry it won't work/I'll still feel sick. I feel sick pretty much every day at the minute and am just getting to the end of my tether (I'm now 27 weeks). The thought of being sick in labour is both imaginable and anxiety inducing.

It helps that lots of you say you wern't sick, but I'm still very worried Confused

Interesting what electra says about the placenta injection causing sickness - wasn't aware of that so will look into it and might refuse it. I also intend to refuse pethadine and gas and air on the basis that it might make me feel or be sick. It will be tens machine and then epidural for me I hope.

so some people eat and arn't sick and other people don't eat and are sick..... Hmm. So there's no hope or definite thing I can do to stop it then. eeeekkkkkkkkkk.

I wasn't sick - both labours, diarrhoea (sp?) cleared everything out at start of active labour. I ate glucose tablets and drank water and no sickness here. I really needed the glucose towards the end too.

SpringHeeledJack · 23/11/2010 16:25

an anti-emetic should work, though, angels

I have to say I had an induced labour, which could well have made a difference

Restrainedrabbit · 24/11/2010 21:13

Ive had the synto jab once to expel the placenta and it didnt make me sick. The other two times I had a natural third stage and no sickness.

PenguinNZ · 25/11/2010 08:35

I wasn't sick at all, and it was a bloody long labour. Ate sarnies, drank loads, no problem. I ended up with a EMCS, and lots of people are sick after the anaesthetic, again, luckily not me as I hate being sick too!

Good luck btw!

littlerats · 25/11/2010 08:56

I ate a whole Dominos Extra Large BBQ Chicken pizza (normally can't stand the things nor eat more than 2 slices) just before I went to hospital (I was 6cm when I got there) about midnight. I thought that I may need some sustenance and to keep energy levels up as I wasn't going to be doing much sleeping.

I wasn't sick and didn't feel remotely sick the entire labour and he was born 6am next morning. I had gas/air and epidural.

Bobby99 · 25/11/2010 09:25

I ate a large portion of chips before heading to the hospital (I really didn't feel like cooking...) and was fine. Got to the hosp, they examined me then gave me co codamol and a sleeping tablet (ha ha, as if...) and I immediately was sick. Bit annoying really, as nobody spotted the co codamol in the vomit (sorry, TMI) so I couldn't have any more in case of overdose.

perfectstorm · 25/11/2010 09:34

I had such bad morning sickness I was prescribed drugs. But I ate in labour and had gas and air and never felt remotely sick at any point.

ib · 25/11/2010 09:40

First labour I had dinner (lasagne) when about 5 cm dilated.

Second labour I only stopped having dinner when contractions got too close to make eating possible - baby was born 3 hours later!

I wasn't sick for either of them, but had really bad ms in early pg.

serenity · 25/11/2010 09:48

I ate cereal with DS1 and was sick when I hit transition (didn't feel sick or nauseous, just was) I didn't eat with DS2 or DD (too quick) but also threw up during transition - think it was just my body's way of adjusting. I had the jab with all three labours, and had no problems with sickness.

I hardly ate anything in the early stages of labour as I just didn't feel like anything, but by the time I got to the hospital the level of ketones in my urine were really high-so high I narrowly avoided being put in a drip (which I really didn't want) Instead the MW ordered me a big tray of food, sandwiches, toast and jam, tea with loads of sugar in(when I usually have none), mini chedders and cheese and made me eat the whole lot! This was at about 4:30am. Then my mum brought us emergency rations of sandwiches the next day and I was drinking and eating sweets, crisps throughout. I WAS sick during labour and, like you, have a terrible phobia of being sick, but the sickness was due to the gas and air and diamorphine rather than what I'd eaten. I wasn't throwing up everywhere and because of the G & A and diamorphine I didn't get really upset about the fact I'd been sick, it was just all part of the process and I was very relaxed about it (DH couldn't believe how relaxed as he's seen me getting really stressed about it previously).

My point is, you really can't and shouldn't avoid eating and drinking during labour-the MW will insist on it, especially if, like me, it was a long labour. I don't think that what I'd eaten made a bit of difference to whether I was sick or not, it was the drugs that made me sick, but also the drugs that made me not care one bit!

Try not to worry about this aspect. I really do understand the feeling of being terrified of being sick but try not to let it overshadow your feelings about the birth.

angels1 · 25/11/2010 16:51

thanks for all the comments - some have made me feel more confident towards things and others have, tbh, freaked me out a bit Confused. I'm hoping that if I feel hungry and eat it will be my bodies way of needing the food. Only thing is, the way I deal with things is often to eat when I'm not that hungry as I worry not eating will make me low blood sugar which will make me feelsick, so in these sorts of situations when I don't know when I'm next going to manage my next meal I tend to force food down as I can feel better afterwards. The ONLY time I've been unable to do that was on my wedding day as I was so nervous!!! And then I felt all shaky from low blood sugar and in our car journey to the reception ate my picnic lunch I'd stashed in the car beforehand Blush.

I just hope hope hope they give me the anti sickness injections often enough and that it does work, as I'm on anti sickness pills now yet still feel pretty sick most days :(

I'm glad (in a I'm not a freak way) that some of you seem to have sick phobias too though - makes me feel not quite so odd.

Had a few glucose sweets and a few squares of chocolate.

Wasn't sick but ended up with heartburn Sad

The tin lid at that point, quite frankly....
