hospital discharge timing

How long did you stay in hospital after giving birth with no complications? Depending on what time I give birth, I might like to stay and rest a bit, considering I have 3DC already and had horrible after pains last time, but am getting the impression I will be discharged after a few hours if there are no complications. What are your experiences? What should I expect?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Was invited to stay overnight after DC2 birth, but left hospital 6 hrs after birth, my choice totally.

after no4,i stayed in 3 days to get some rest,i dont know if things have changed, but if they are not full, you could ask if you could stay a couple of days, especially as its no4,so its not as if you will be pestering them every 5 mins lol.

At my hospital they will discharge you if you want after 6 hours, but equally if you want to stay and have room, they are happy for you to go on to the ante natal ward. I could have stayed another night or two with my DTs but was anxious to get home and so was discharged after two nights. I could have "played" the needing to get feeding established card, which they would happily have accepted as there was certainly no pressure on me from the staff to go - quite the opposite in fact (the DTs are no 3 and 4 for me so not exactly a first time mum either!).

Good luck and happy labouring!

nymum I have recently changed the hospital I'm due to have dc3 in because of this issue. The hospital I was due to go to have a 4-6 hr discharge time, I have 5 and 3 year old at home. I asked my midwife was there anything I could do about it and she unofficially advised me to change, she said the "needing to get feeding established" was the only way she could think of, but they are a really busy hospital. The hospital I'm now going to is where I had dc1 and dc2 and they do not encourage early discharge (we have moved house recently and that's why we originally had changed)
