Max time from show to labour?

I'm 36+3 and had a show this morning. Nothing else is going on and I know labour could be a while away yet. But everything I have read says it could be up to a couple of weeks; is that the longest it could be? Am I definitely not going to make it to 40 weeks?

Ooh I just logged on to ask the same thing - I'm 38+5 and had the same this morning...

JosephineClaire · 02/11/2010 09:48

(Even more weirdly, Lorelai is on my name shortlist!)

Lorelai · 02/11/2010 10:32

Oh, how funny! I'm still at work and not supposed to finish until next week; wondering if I should warn them I won't make it!

I had my show at 35 weeks with DD1 and she was born at 40+5.

I had my show at 10pm with DD2 and she was born in a very short labour at 3 am the next morning.

Lorelai · 02/11/2010 10:40

Cool, thanks. So I don't need to start cancelling plans for 2 weeks time just yet then!

No I wouldn't, to me it was a wake up call that I was really going to have a baby!

OnlyWantsOne · 02/11/2010 10:49

I had mine at 40 weeks and DD 4 hours later,

and then again at 35 weeks - still pregnant!! 36 weeks

Lorelai · 02/11/2010 12:00

I didn't have one last time so came as a bit of a shock!

This may be a stupid question, but the midwife I spoke to this morning said to wear a maternity pad and watch out in case my waters start to leak. If I am wearing a pad, how will I be able to tell? Surely leaking implies a small amount not a gushing like I had last time, so it would be absorbed by the pad. Am getting really paranoid that they might be but can't tell.

You'd think 2nd time around I would know these things Blush

sorry, but smell it!

wee smells like wee, amniotic fluid smells sweetish, bit like semen I think

bumpybecky · 02/11/2010 13:25

oh and midwives have testing strips that can detect amniotic fluid

Lorelai · 02/11/2010 13:44

Would do but I have a cold and therefore no sense of smell! Pad is slightly discoloured though

really hate to ask this, feel free not to answer but....

are you sure it was a show?

when I've got a bad cold all mucous production is increased, not just my nose....

Lorelai · 02/11/2010 15:13

Yeah, pretty sure. A big blob of very thick jelly, snot coloured but much thicker. (sorry if TMI but you did ask :))

And my cold was bad but is coming to an end now.

Amniotic smells really nice actually, a bit like marzipan. Well mine did anyway! I had on and off contractions and then a show so it doesn't always mean one will come before the other every time.

Jaquelinehyde · 02/11/2010 20:50

I had my show and my waters went (totally) at 30 weeks. DS was born at 34.5 weeks.

Dreemagurl · 02/11/2010 21:19

I lost my plug then had a show a day later. DD1 was born 2 weeks later, had a few more shows a day or so before established labour. There's really no way to tell, it's not a great indication of labour timing.

nattiecake · 02/11/2010 23:18

I had my show at midnight and baba was born at midday. I think its a case of it can be weeks, but more often than not it'll be soon.

I was convinced I wasnt gonna make 40 weeks after baba was 3/5 engaged at 31 weeks, but he was born two days overdue...

Lorelai · 03/11/2010 11:18

Well as long as I can hang on till I have finished my handover notes at work (5000 words and counting!) then it can come whenever it likes!

bloody show on waking on the wednesday (bang on 36 weeks), baby born midday Thursday. I went in to be checked over because it was so early, they detected contractions that I wasn't feeling, and I went home with my daughter Smile so you just never know!

JosephineClaire · 05/11/2010 08:15

Hey Lorelai...

Well, I'm still here - had a clear show on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, then was up with period type pain all through last night (after sex with DH to try and encourage things along!) and this morning have graduated to bloody show with more period pain.

The pain isn't very much at all, so I'm guessing I still have some time to go, as I just can't see how my lazy body could get going today....but fingers crossed anyway! (I'm 39+1 now)

How are you getting on?

Jo x

rollerbaby · 05/11/2010 21:33

Hi - can I join the thread? I've just had my first bit of show!! At 40+5 am very relieved as worrying about being induced etc. I've only had a bit - like half a teaspoon maybe, and no blood. So this could go on for days right?

Northernlurker · 05/11/2010 21:40

I had a show with dd2 about two hours before I realised I was contracting and with dd3 it went on a bit through the day so about 7 hours before I was contracting well. I ws 41 weeks pregnant in both cases!

Lorelai · 06/11/2010 06:58

Well nothing major going on here yet (37 weeks exactly), but I did have bad backache and period-type pains yesterday evening, but they went away when I had a bath, and nothing overnight. Slight backache and period discomfort (not enough to call pain!) this morning, so I think things may be moving along, just slowly.

Would be bloody typical if it starts today though - DH is at work so I have the joys of DD (2.9) all to myself Hmm That should be fun for early labour.

Honeymoo - it could go on for days, but at 40+5 I would say not very many :) And they shouldn't be wanting to induce you till at least 40+10 anyway, and even then you can say no if you want. A show means your cervix is getting ready, so I'd say there is a good chance you will go into labour naturally.
