Hello!
Do you have any experience of using hypnobirthing and any recommendations of books/cds? I'm 27 weeks now and figure that anything that'll help me feel slightly less scared will be a good thing!x

I've not used it, but have seen it in action, and it seems to do the trick!Smile

I'm sure there are some posters who have tried it. Didn't want to leave your post unanswered.

Is this your first pregnancy? IME, fear plays a huuuuge part in how your labour goes.

Hypnobirthing's great. It teaches you to give birth without being scared. After all, birth is natural, animals do it without screaming and shouting. Fear causes your muscles to tense up, which means they don't work properly and things become painful.

I did Hypnobirthing and recommend the Marie Mongan version, there's a book and CD and courses across the country.

If your birth is straightforward, as most of them are, you should have a lovely, natural birth without having to take any drugs.

If things become more complicated, then you have a method of staying calm and in control. I had a 5 day early labour which the hypnobirthing breathing and relaxation really helped with. By day 5, I was getting tired and put on a TENS machine so I could get some sleep. I can honestly say, I felt nothing worse than period cramps at the start and increasing sensations of pressure once I was in proper labour and had no pain relief the whole time, other than the TENS machine. Yes, it was hard work, but I used breathing and relaxation to keep myself calm and focused. I'd do it again any day!

My baby was a bit distressed (we later found out the cord was round his neck) and I ended up transferring to hospital. The ambulance men couldn't believe I was in labour. The midwives kept commenting on how calm and quiet I was. I absolutely hate hospitals and was surprised myself by how I didn't seem bothered by it at the time.

Definitely give it a try, you can't lose anything

It's really interesting to hear that. I'm glad it worked for you Marylou.
Creeper- it's my first time and I figured that the more nervous I am, the more I'll have to be nervous about anyway so am all for trying anything now that will relax me ahead of the big day!
Thanks for the responses! x

I used the Natal Hypnotherapy CD and really reall recommend it.

I am quite sceptical about things like that but am also quite logical, and it seemed to make sense that the more relaxed I was, the better it would be for my body. I found out as much as I could about the physiological side and that really helped me understand what would happen and to feel less scared.

I had seen the CD as a nice way to feel relaxed while PG and to have a chance to lie down and chill out for a while, but didn't really think it was doing anything.

Then a few days before my due date I got my mum to listen to it to (as she was going to be a birth partner along with DH I wanted her to be aware of it so she could remind me of key things if I was scared etc). She was convinced I'd gone to sleep but I was definitely 'there' throughout and really aware of everything around me, so it was obviously having more of an impact than I'd thought.

I found the breathing/visualisation really helpful - when in labour I think I sort of went into my own little world and was so focused on breathing etc. It gave me something to concentrate on and I honestly think it made a massive difference.

I may have just had a 'easy' birth as I used TENS machine from the start and G&A at 8cm and honestly didn't feel any big pain at all. I don't know what it was down to but felt I should try everything I could.

Worst case - you get some nice relaxing time when PG. Best case - it 'works' and will help you have an easier labour, so no downside really!

Good luck.

I also recommend Natal Hypnotherapy. Smile

tiokiko- that's a really encouraging story! Thanks!
Think I'm going to take the advice and order the Natal Hypnotherapy CD to start with and see what I think of that- just have to wait for it to come back in stock now!

No problem - it's available as Buy It Now on eBay at the moment by the way (in fact - that's my other top tip as I sold mine on eBay for almost what it cost new - bargain!).

DH and I still reminisce about the CD (yes, we're quite sad) and the quirky little things it says...I do remember thinking it was a load of nonsense when I first heard it as it's all about visualising the warm light and talks about 'sensations' when your baby is ready to come out rather than 'contractions' but...I am a big fan and would use it again next time.

Hope it works for you - in the meantime enjoy the quiet time listening to it at this stage, useful to get any birth partners to listen too (maybe a bit later once you're familiar/comfortable with it) so that they can remind you of key things once you're in labour.

I did a hypnobirthing course (the mongan method), and used her book and CD religiously in the run up to the birth. I think it might have worked for a straightforward labour, but I ended up being induced for PE and having uterine hyperstimulation (8 contractions in 10 minutes with NO dilation whatsoever), and believe me, there is no way you can hypnobirth your way through that! I ended up with an epidural and an emergency section. I felt really cheated by the hypnobirthing, I had really bought into it, trusted the teacher, practised hard, and was expecting it to work. It was useless in the face of the contractions I was having. In the early stages when they were like severe period pains it was helpful - once they started to feel like I was ripping in two, it was no help whatsoever!!

Sorry to hear that anastasiak- sounds like you really had a difficult time!
