Practice the other pain relief techniques.

when you feel the first contraction start, get into a comfortable position, and breath out whatever breath you have slowly. Then breath in as slowly as you think you can manage (try to get up to 25 at least with fast counting to get a feel for it) and then breath out as slowly as you can manage (Again aim for a count up to 25).

You can try a partner very lightly dragging their fingers up your back either side of your spine and then down again, - fairy touches.

This combination really gets the natural endorphines going, but the breathing can alone.

Once you have got to grips with the breathing, think about something that makes you go 'Mmmmmmm' if you can, as you start it.

Hope that helps. Start this now so that it is all second nature by the time it gets a little more difficult.

Aw good luck. Do try it. It is very effective if you get it right.

However, if it doesn't work, head straight back to hospital and say you are there for gas and air as you need a bit of help.

It sounds like your body has been working for some time, so ignore the 2cm thing. All that tells you is that at that time you were 2cm, NOT how long you have to go.

Probably once your body decides it is going to go for it properly you'll be really quick and efficient.

Oh, and the breathing thing. You release the breath you have, then start breathing in - by the time you have breathed out the contraction should have passed.

So you will always know when it starts, that you only have to breath in and out and it will be over.
