lochia restarted bright red with clots 5 weeks post-birth - any chance not sign of problem?

After going through all the normal colour changes and practically stopping, my post-birth lochia has restarted and is bright red, and I've passed a 50p sized clot.
Saw my GP who wanted to start me on antibiotics, but as I have no pain or fever and my swab was negative for a womb infection, has agreed to let me wait until I see the hospital gynie on Mon.
I really want to avoid antibiotics as am breastfeeding, which has been tough to establish and I know they will make me feel crappy and probably give me thrush. But obviously I don't want to risk a serious infection either.
It's likely I'll have to be scanned on Mon to check my uterous for retained products and then given a D&C if there's anything there. Am desperate to avoid this if at all possible as it means a general anaesthetic and I'm so worried I'll end up having to give up breast feeding due to all the added stress.
After having pre-eclampsia and high BP that needed medicating after the birth, I feel so stressed and fed up. I just can't cope with any more medical problems.
Has anybody had these symptoms and not needed intervention? Or had retained products that needed removing?

Sorry no experience, but you won't need to stop breast feeding. If you/baby get thrush, a little cream (daktaran) on the nipple will sort it out, and if you need a GA, your baby can be cup fed if you don't want to give a bottle.

Sorry you are feeling so crappy, here's a hug....

whippetlover do try and see your GP, I know it is probably the last thing that you want to do but if it is an infection or retained products it is only likely to get worse.

I had the same with my dc1, I had 2 courses of antibiotics which is usually the 1st line of treatment to rule out infection but the bleeding continued, sometimes stopped and then restarted again. The antibiotics I used were suitable for use during breastfeeding and I made sure I included lots of "good bacteria", such as live yogurt etc. to avoid thrush. Unfortunately the bleeding continued and I had an ultrasound that showed a large chunk of placenta left. I had to have a dc, it was done as a day case. The hospital were great, I told them from the beginning that I would be bringing my baby as I was breastfeeding, they arranged for me to have a private room and I was 1st on the theatre list so that I wasn't nil by mouth for too long. I expressed some milk in case ds needed a feed during the op/recovery.

I was home within a few hours and although I dreaded going in I soon began to feel so much better. It certainly did not affect breastfeeding. Good luck and I hope it works out well for you.

Sorry, just reread your post and seen that you have seen your GP already. I do hope all goes well with your consultant appointment.

I didn't pass any clots, but bled for 12 weeks. Turned out to be due to being put on Cerezette. Just a thought if you started taking this recently.

What did it turn out to be, OP?
