Please let me know if you got extra skin overhang/apron on top of your Cesarean Section scar? Yes or No?

Hello all of you who had a elective or emergency section. I just want to get a realistic idea of section overhang or apron and if it is a universal thing that everyone gets or is it luck (determined by surgeon's skill set?). Please help me understand this as I am carrying a breech/transverse baby and will discuss the section with consultants and want to understand the reality from mom's side that have been through it. Thanks xoxox

Yes.

After 3 c-sections I have an overhang that's so overhangy I can grab great big double handfuls. But I had giant babies that stretched me hugely.

bigstripeytiger · 18/10/2010 18:55

I have it. I dont think that it is anything to do with the surgeon, unless you have a tummy tuck at the same time.

It's luck. I was slim and healthy pre-pregnancy, cycled 16 miles a day every day of the pregnancy, ate healthily, used moisturisers (itchy bump) had an excellent surgeon etc etc etc.

Yes I have an overhang. Probably same as stretchmarks, all luck/genetics.

themothershipcalling · 18/10/2010 20:54

I am QTPie, same weight, same bio-oil and palmers.

No over-hang here either - did have very good surgeon apparently but all I can remeber is the white wellies.

GinAfford · 18/10/2010 20:56

Yep c-section flap here also - just one emcs due to undiagnosed breech (WISH they'd known beforehand!). I just tuck it in my knickers and go about my day!

mumblecrumble · 18/10/2010 21:03

hmmmm. Flap? That implies something a bit skinny... mine is a giant over hang and feels no pain or sensation......

schmee · 18/10/2010 21:18

Massive one - no sensation in it the same as mumblecrumble. Bit weird really but I manage to tuck it into big pants most of the time and try to avoid stretching upwards in public in case it pops out (which I won't be aware of due to lack of sensation)

QTPie - you sound rather extraordinary - thank you for sharing the detail of your rather perfect regime here.

No, one emcs. Sensation loss though.

scareprudence · 18/10/2010 21:31

Well aren't you super, QTPie. Clever old you.

Yes, I have overhang, in case it wasn't obvious. I hate lots of things about my body, but not that. It's there because I had a baby and that's an amazing thing.

I did after my first but after my second section it seems to have gone, either the surgeon was really kind and did a mini tummy tuck or the bottom bit underneath my scar got fatter Shock :o

Oh and I did nothing right in my pregnancies, ate too much, piled on the weight, did no exercise. I didn't get any stretch marks either, have them from puberty but none with either pregnancy.

schmee · 18/10/2010 21:58

Wow - whilst I sympathise with the OP's question, I'm quite shocked reading some of the posts here. I honestly didn't know people really thought so much about weight gain during and post-pregnancy, or the aesthetics of it. I had my caesarian because the main health risks were to me whereas for the birth the main risks would have been for my children. Unfortunately that's left me with a saggy belly.

It's the luck of the draw whether you have a caesarian ledge/overhang. Same as it is the luck of the draw whether you have scarring and damage in another part of your body if you don't have a caesarian. And whether you get stretch marks. And whether your boobs hang past your belly button post-breastfeeding.

BTW it's normal to put on weight during the first trimester - advisable if you can (some people can't due to morning sickness).

missorinoco · 18/10/2010 22:00

Yes, emcs. I have never had a flat belly though, even pre cs.

babyicebean · 18/10/2010 22:01

I have one that the kids call 'freddie the flap' and you can grab it in both hands and flap it up and down.

I did nothing right either as I ate whatever I could keep down and did loose 1+ stone with each child due to HG.

PrincessBoo · 18/10/2010 22:02

I'm overweight and do have an overhang but I don't know what it would be like if I wasn't. I have sensation loss just on the one side of my scar. I like to touch it funnily enough, I like the wierdness of it!

schmee · 18/10/2010 22:03

What's HG?

Meglet · 18/10/2010 22:07

Yes.

Went to the gym all the way through both pregnancies and still have good abs muscles but still got an overhang. The only thing that got rid of it was a massive stress induced weight loss, which I wouldn't recommend!

My overhang was worse after my em cs though, not too bad after a planned cs and better after a hysterectomy. I am the abdominal surgery queen Grin Hmm.

TheBrideOfBlatherstein · 18/10/2010 22:09

2 sections here - 1 emergency and 1 elective - have a massive overhang, arrived after the first one and never went away. I do have feeling in it though, came back after a couple of weeks both times.

I was/am still a little overweight though. Not sure it would go completely even if I lost all my excess weight though. Working on it so we'll see.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 18/10/2010 22:09

hyperemesis gravidarum

severe morning sickness.

aliceinlalaland · 18/10/2010 22:13

2CSs here (1 ECNMC 1ELCS). I have a slight bulge above the scar but not what you'd call an overhand it doesn't bother me really. Am skinny but I'm not sure if that's anything to do with it or whether it's genes as people have said (certainly not due to healthy lifestyle on my part Blush). No stretchmarks from pregnancy either (though I do have them on legs and bum from puberty). Had teeny bumps both times though (something about the shape of my ribcage apparently) so maybe that's it. 2 people I know who've had CS have overhangs that they really hate so I know it can be an issue for people

aliceinlalaland · 18/10/2010 22:14

Sorry, make that 1EMCS, 1ELCS (inadvertently made up a whole new surgical way of having a baby there...)

aliceinlalaland · 18/10/2010 22:17

Crikey, just reread my post again and aside from the multiple typos it sounds really rather smug. I'd just like to add that my boobs are in a terrible shape and I've got many many more wrinkles since having my 2 DDS...

oh and yes, 8 months on from 2nd CS am still a bit numb near scar area

PaisleyPumpkin · 18/10/2010 22:19

I sort of feel the same way as schmee reading this thread.
It's funny what people worry about.
