Lansdell Suite and Sir Stanley Clayton word

Can anybody share recent experiences on either of these private wards, and/or recommend a consultant there?

I visited the Lansdell Suite - lovely, but slightly put off by lack on nursery...

Many thanks!

Would be so grateful for any thoughts - has anyone on MN had recent experience - good or bad - at either of these private maternity wings?

One of my friends had her baby with Mr Kellehner (Lansdell Suite) and would definietly recommend him. Good views there too.

kitstwins · 26/10/2010 08:55

I had my twins at Sir Stanley Clayton but it was four years ago. I'm not sure if that counts as recent. There was a nursery where you could feed your babies (breastpumps, rocking chairs, soft lighting, etc - I vividly recall sitting in one of those rockers strapped to a double breastpump whilst some father changed his baby's nappy next to me...). The midwives will also take your babies to the nursery at night if you need some rest.

Other things off the top of my head:

Separate menu - I remember the food being not bad. Choice, plenty of fruit and veg, etc.
Fridge and tv in rooms
Nice, helpful midwives.
En suite bathroom
Room and bathroom cleaned every day and sheets changed every day

The only downside for me was that breastfeeding support was pretty crap in spite of all the 'Breast is Best' posters everywhere. The midwives were just too busy and were having to cover the understaffed postnatal ward. I'm not sure if that was just a one off and things were worse for me as my set up was complicated (tube fed premmie twins) but it's worth asking them about their breastfeeding support if you plan to feed, etc.

Hope this helps. My consultant was Kumar who was very good - excellent in fact in the face of a very complicated and fraught pregnancy.

Ferdie, I had both DC's at Stanley Clayton in Queen Charlotte's, most recently in Jan this year and first time on Feb 2008. I could not fault it and if I have another I will be going back there for sure. Re Kitstwins point re b'feeding support and the midwives being too busy, I did not have this experience either time, on the contrary I found them v helpful and attentive all round, and they took DC each time to the nursery the first night so I could get rest and brought them in for feeding. My consultant was Andrew McCarthy, also would highly recommend as a consultant, hth.

Ferdie · 27/10/2010 13:30

Thanks to you all - really helpful. I am going to see Stanley Clayton later this week.

Good to hear that there is a nursery at Stankey Clayton - given that I am probably going to be having a CS, the lack of nursery at the Lansdell is a little off-putting...Final plea for recent experience/consultant recommendations at Lansdell Suite?

AVOID THE LANSDELL SUITE. Con Kelleher is fabulous. He delivered my son and also the children of a number of my friends and he is brilliant. BUT do not go to St Thomas's. I had a baby there this summer and it was shocking.

helenlouisey · 27/10/2010 14:47

Sir Stanley Clayton ward (and Mr McCarthy) are fab, I had a baby there 2 years ago and my sister had a baby there 9 months ago. The ward is small, I think maybe about 8 rooms, and the staff are fantastic. The rooms are quite basic, but very clean, the staff are very caring and extremely attentive, the level of care is amazing and would highly recommend it. The other big positive is that you are in a big NHS hospital and it has one of the best Neonatal wards in the country, fingers crossed you will never need this back up, but always reassuring.

Good luck with rest of your pregnancy

susie100 · 27/10/2010 15:00

Pelvic - what happened at St Thomases?
Sorry to hear you had a bad time

Ferdie · 29/10/2010 14:26

Pelvic - sorry to hear that.

I have just been to see Sir Stanley Clayton ward - really liked it. The rooms are not large or luxurious, but are more than adequate. More importantly, it is right by the neonates dpt, and it is feels very calm...

Only question now is - which consultant? Mr McCarthy is (sadly for me, but lucky for him) on holiday slap bang when I am due. Looks like Mr Kumar is recommended - any others recommendations? Professor Bennett?

Ferdie, am glad you liked Stanley Clayton, I think you will be very happy with the care you receive there. Shame Mr McCarthy will be out when your baby is due, I saw Mr Kumar a few times late in my first pregnancy, something was spotted at a growth scan for DC1 so Mr McCarthy referred me for some scans right before the birth as I believe Kumar is a foetal medicine specialist and he was a very nice man with a lovely manner (thankfully all was ok). Also I did a weekend antenatal course at QC before DC1's birth and the mums to be who were attending Mr Kumar spoke very highly of him. Good luck.

supersunnyday may I ask how far along you are? we rang st. thomas' nhs side of the maternity section and they won't do a tour for us until 28 weeks, but we haven't asked the Lansdell Suite yet. I imagine they'll be more flexible but wasn't sure if it's worth asking yet.

Ferdie · 31/10/2010 14:37

Transaltantic - we saw Lansdell suite at 10 weeks - they didn't even ask how far along we were!

Supersunnyday - good luck!! Have heard great things about Mr Oteng-Ntim (aka Mr Eugene - apparently!) Also, a friend has worked on the obs side at Guys & St T's and cannot talk highly enough of the neonatal unit there. Would still be very interested to know what you make of it.

lizzylu - thanks very much - will be calling Mr Kumar's office tomorrow...Did you or any of the mums on the antenatal course mention any of the other consultants?

Have an appointment to see Mr Kumar in a 10 days - fingers crossed that I will like him!

Re St Thomas's - supersunnyday - have you been to see it yet? There are a few other threads on MN that mention Lansdell, but nothing much in the last 6 months or so, I think.

BTW - Queen Charolotte is not the same as C&W - Queen Charlotte is based in West London, near Shepherds Bush. If you are anywhere in North or West London, it won't be that far.

Just found this thread having done a search (and posted my own thread re Landsell Suite!) supersunnyday what did you think of Landsell Suite after your tour and did you book in with any of the consultants yet? I am also only about 6 weeks but very worried about it getting booked up!

p.s. I realise this thread is from a few weeks ago so if things haven't worked out I'm really sorry for bringing it upxx

I toured the Stanley Clayton ward last year when I was expecting (did not make it past 14 weeks sadly) and we were both impressed - it's not flash, but it seemed very homely, calm, and we both liked the in-ward nursery. he midwives were also very friendly.

AbyCat · 17/10/2011 20:13

My total costs for a 3 night stay (1 night pre C-section & 2 nights post op) on the Stanley Clayton ward a couple of months ago came to around £9500 - majority of this was obv the consultants fees though. I can really recommend it - the midwives were just wonderful & couldn't do enough to help & support you, including with breastfeeding.

I had dd#2 at Lansdell in July and really enjoyed the experience. I was under the care of Dr. Kunde and he was really wonderful. Excellent care during pregnancy and delivery. I ended up with c-section for reasons beyond Dr. Kunde's control and he did a fantastic job. The scar is low, small and neat and healed very quickly. I really can't recommend him enough. Will definitely go with him when we decide to have baby #3.
Lansdell rooms are not huge, but they've got everything you need and are very clean. Food is also quite good. Midwives were wonderful - very caring and rushed to my side any time day or night if I needed help. They also brought in a bed for my husband, so he stayed with us overnight.
I think there was a plan to move Lansdell to a different floor by the end of the year, so the rooms might be even nicer after the move.
Good luck
