hi i'm 37 wks today with my 2nd dc. for the past 5 days or so its become increasingly difficult to walk and iv got constant pelvic pain accompanied by shooting pains when i move my legs to roll over in bed, stand up sit down etc. my ds didnt engage much and i had a bad birth experience with him, please tell me this is just baby engaging more and thats a good thing for labour?!!
im secretly hoping that with the back, tummy and hip pain too that its labour starting but i think thats just wishful thinking Smile any ideas or similar feelings ladies?

Hi there, I work in a osteopaths and my boss Quentin Shaw specialises in what I think you have. Its a condition called SPD. It can be treated. Our website is tunbridgewellsosteopaths.co.uk

I had SPD at the end of DS2's pg - though it's changed name now to something like PGP (pelvic girdle pain) or something.

Firstly, in pg you should be able to self-refer to a physio who can give you advice & exercises that can help, even later on in pg.

Secondly, try and keep your knees together, sounds funny but it can help, things like:
not sitting cross-legged;
plastic bag on your car seat so you can swivel in and out more easily with knees together
rolling over carefully in bed keeping knees together, and so on.

Not much longer to go and it will ease off after the baby arrives:)

Sounds like SPD, I have been suffering with this since week 14 but as I have gotten heavier (and especially since the baby has assumed a head down position) its gotten worse. Sounds to me like your baby has engaged and now you are suffering more too. God I have yet to engage so perhaps it will get worse. Have a look on websites about SPD and things you can do to help. Keep you legs together and support yourself with pillows as best you can.

Hi- I had PSD for most of my pregnancy and for the last two months I could barely walk. My son is now seven months old and my pelvis has almost gone. There is not alot you can do for it other than lots of rest. Not sure where you are based but I saw a fantatic osteo based in Teddington who I still see occasionally now. I found the NHS physio/osteos useless and ended up paying but well worht it. Good luck!!

Definately sounds like PGP. I second Jones76 NHS physio useless but did give me a pelvic support belt but ended up paying to see an osteo who is a life saver. I have gone from barely being able to walk to the end of the street to being quite active and relatively pain free.

Immediate things to do is get yourself properly supported when you are sleeping, rest with feet up, walk slowly (at 37 weeks myself I know this should come naturally), keep your knees together as much as possible especially when turning over in bed, no squatting down, getting in and out of car, try not to go up and down stairs more than is essential.

And there is a good PGP support website that has loads of info on it but unfortunately can't find the link right now.

oh my! after reading a few comments yesterday i rang mw on call who said without an examination she cant say. she explained alittle about spd/pgp and said it usually occurs earlier in pregnancy but not unknown later on. i'm due to see my usual mw thurs. mw on phone said if im in any worse pain by mon get a gp appt who will refer me to physio but she said they are really booked up at mo and probably wont get an appt until after baby is here!! great!!! she also said there isnt much they can do other than advice, show me exercises and give me a support belt.
had a much better nights sleep last night and dont feel like iv been hit by a bus like i did yesterday but i am fully aware that i still need to rest to make sure it stays this way.
do any of you know about vbac births and spd? after last time its so important to me to give birth naturally, now i feel that its going to be taken away from me again. Sad

You need to make sure that prior to having any pain relief you show the people in the hospital ow far apart you can open your legs without being in pain as if they force them beyond that you can end up in a lot of pain after the birth. There is a fair amount of information on the net about it. It shouldnt cause you to need a c section (unless its really very bad) but you do need to make them aware when having the baby.

JustKeepSwimming · 10/10/2010 16:57

I think one of the main positions to try and avoid in labour is on your back with knees held apart, if you can remember that. :)

ilovefirelighters · 10/10/2010 19:05

thanks lennon80 i will put it firmly in birth plan and will tell them myself and make dh very aware of what i am capable of. justkeepswimming i will not be labouring on my back anyway as im also hypermobile which affects my back more than anywhere else. iv had friends who have really suffered with spd and im really nothing like that so it is still in back of my mind that its just baby really well engaged and its not nice. or like mw said i could be in labour, some women it takes days of discomfort before proper contractions start. who knows!!
