Successful VBAC after failed induction

Hi,

I am just wondering if there are many ladies out there who have successfully gone into spontaneous labour 2nd time around after a complete failure of induction the 1st time, ending up with E/CS.

I was induced with prostin 3 times last time & absolutely nothing happened. No labour, no dilation at all.
I have agreed to try for a VBAC if I go into spontaneous labour before 41 weeks and am curious as to what my chances are as in all honesty I am terified Blush.

I am currently 31 weeks...

Thanks

Hi Yummygummybear. I could have written your post! Not so confident about VBAC though and almost convinced I am going to go for an ELCS. The stats I have seen were not good (was quoted 30 something %). I too am terrified of ending up with another emcs!

Yummygummybear · 07/10/2010 14:28

I thought that stats were more than that & successful VBAC was something like 70%. Although that could be hospital stats.

I ended up with an elective c-section as my body just refused to labour but I think if you dilated & laboured your chances are much higher.

Confused

TBH I haven't been over confident in the advice I was given, that figure was based on attempts to vbac following failure to progress after induction (using hospital figures I assume?) My MW had told me before that it was 60-70%. I wish you the best ofluck though and would be interested to hear if you get any more positive info

Am also in exactly the same position. Am going to refuse to be induced after last time so if I go over or they want DC out early cos of GD they'll have to give me a CS. Will watch this thread with interest.

Also, do you feel that on the one hand you get told you have choices but then in the same breath they push you into doing what they want? Surely it shouldn't be down to how forceful any individual women can be?

Yummygummybear · 09/10/2010 09:58

Absolutely Trixie!

The cons midwife gave me all horror stories of a c-section despite me having had one already & possibly being left with no choice this time Hmm
Very, very pro VBAC at my hospital & would have been quite happy to induce & let me go overdue by 12 days

hi there yummygummybear i am 37+1 and after an induced labour last time with slow progress resulting in emcs i am worried how things will go with my forthcoming vbac. our hospital stats are over 80% successful vbacs so fairly confident things will run smoothly. however you never really know how things will turn out. i have been given alot of support as there is a new vbac support clinic at hospital. i dont know if these things are standard or if its just our hospitals policy but
1.they will leave me as long as possible until they induce because there is increased risk of scar rupture when induced resulting in yet another section.

  1. from established labour will give me aprox 1 hr per cm dilated then 1.5 hrs for pushing so will only labour for 10 hrs aprox.

at 31 weeks you still have time to gather together some questions to ask regarding your worries.

when they start talking induction i will be firmly crossing my legs demanding to be monitored and if me baby and placenta are all doing ok then i will refuse. its not that im scared of induction its just the extra risk it carries when you've had a section. fingers crossed in a couple of weeks i can come back to this thread and give you a possitive vbac after induction story you want x

Yummygmmybear - I was searching for info because I am 39 weeks and have a consultant's appt today to discuss E/CS. Had a very similar experience to you with my first. Whilst happy to try for VBAC, I do not want to be induced (they suggested at last appt they might try but I thought that they didn't do this to VBAC women?)and I do not want to wait until 40+12 (I was 40+18 with my first!!!). Will let you know what they say. Would be good to hear if you have found out any more information.

bumping as I'm watching this thread with interest

Yummygummybear · 20/10/2010 17:43

Although I have said I would try for a VBAC if I go into labour naturally before 41 weeks I am now tempted to ask for an elective section but am scared to say the words as I feel it is frowned upon & seen as a cop out Sad and I may be thoroughly questioned about my choice/change of heart..

I have an appt with the consultant next Friday at 34 weeks.

MsVance - How did your appt go??

Just to update..

At 34+3 baby is transverse so might end up with an elective anyway. I have to go back in 3 weeks for another scan..
