Help - huge first baby dillema!

Ever since my first scan, the hospital have been predicting a big baby (they run in my family) but had to have a scan at 34 to check for low placenta (fine) and the consultant told me that my son was already 6+lb and that he thought that I would end up with a whopping 12lb-er!!! Wants me to go back at 38 weeks with a view to either induction or c section. He wasn't very confident about the success of early induction and was obviously more keen on the c section. Much as I don't fancy attempting to bring an enormous whopper naturally (scared of huge tear, incontinence and never wanting sex again due to agony), I am a carer for my disabled husband, and don't really want to start off my life as a new mum crippled by major abdo surgery. Anyone got any pearls of wisdom?

excellent news Cubby! (The BP thing happened to me too... got sent to a room with a 30 min blood pressure test and at the end of it all was OK.. I was just fed up and hyped up!)

Keep us informed of the next news from the other consultant

from my experience the best thing about a bigger baby is that they seem to sleep through the night earlier

The community midwife told us that the day after we brought DS home. Eight months later I'm still waiting...

WestCountryLass · 12/09/2005 21:39

My DS was born at 34 weeks and he was 5lb 8oz. My DD was born fullterm (39 weeks) 8lb 12oz so on the larger side of average. I think my DS would have been around 8lbs born as he was 7lb 8oz at 6 weeks and he lost one pound of his birthweight.

Hopefully I am reassurring you that babies with a predicted weight of 6lb at 34 weeks might not be overly massive if born on time

I have heard that scans to predict weight are notoriously inaccurate. In fact everyone that I know who has been told their baby will be small or big has had an average sized baby.

PS. DD was born at home, it was beautiful and I really hope you can home birth too

hehe, me too LeahE

big babies are great.

mine was 11 lb 4 and was predicted ot be about 10 lb full term from scans.... but was 2 weeks late!
labour was quick and he popped out OK. bit of a tear but no stitches! althought because he had the cord around his neck they were getting ready to ventuse him out - nothing to do with his size I think.

once they're out though; they sleep and eat really well. lovely

oh and if it hurts then have some pain releif!

Did those of you that had larger babies put on a lot of weight?

My friend who is a week overdue has put on 5 stone.Another friend who put on 5 stone had a 9lb 11 girl and my sister who put on 3.5 stone had a 9lb 4 girl all at due date.

I put on 2 stone and my daughter was 7lb 15 at due date.

My due friend said "I must be having a big baby" but I wondered if the two go hand in hand..?

serah · 13/09/2005 08:28

No... I put on a couple of kilos overall, equating to considerable weight loss after the birth!

My baby was 9lb at 42 weeks though, so he is a bit of a lightweight compared to some.

monkeytrousers · 13/09/2005 08:51

No, same here.

Lollyloo · 13/09/2005 18:29

I put 3 stone on. Still trying to lose the last one!

A quick update. Just got back from visit with consultant, who as my m/w predicted was absolutely wonderful. My b/p was through the roof again before the consultation 168/110 (knew it would be as I was sooooo stressed!). The m/w that took it said she would try a couple more times and after encouraging me to think calm thoughts her parting shot as I left to chill in the waiting room was, 'you better calm down or we'll be keeping you in!' So helpful, as you can imagine!!!
Anyway, the consultant assured me that I wasn't having a 12 pounder, he predicted between 81/2 and 9, which I said was average for our family. His only reservation for a home birth was the slight possibility of shoulder dystocia, which he said can be a bit difficult to manage at home, but he said that as long as my m/w was confident (which she is) he had no problems. He said that it isn't always the bigger babies this happens with anyway, and it was really impossible to predict. Basically said that as long as I was prepared to consider coming into hospital if there were any major complications, he was really happy to recommend a home birth!!! Then he took my b/p again, which had returned to 130/80 which he said was fine. I am so happy I could just about burst. Rang my m/w who seemed really chuffed, she is coming round on Monday to do the paperwork and give me a heads up on the preparation. So I'm under strict instructions not to pop until then. Thanks for all your encouragement and support. I'll let you know how the home birth goes.
