Will my big baby come earlier rather than later?

Growth scans on my huuuuge bump have shown my baby to be on the large side(95th centile femur length, 97th abdomen circumference). if the scan is correct and it's a whopper: is it more likely to come promptly rather than going overdue and getting even bigger? (DS was 2 days early and an average sized 8lb 5 if that makes any difference.

Mine were all late, even the 10lb 6ozer was induced at 17 days over!

Avocadoes · 03/10/2010 20:02

8 days late. 10lbs 2oz. Quite an easy birth though!

Giddyup · 03/10/2010 20:03

gah, I thought it was probably wishful thinking!

2 weeks late, 9lb 9oz. I'm sure there's no correlation. If there is I'm going to have stern words with DS about his timekeeping Grin

merryandmad · 03/10/2010 20:16

DD2 was 8 days late and 10lb 8.5oz.
(DD1 was 11 days late and 7lb 13oz)

Giddyup · 03/10/2010 20:19

But were the big late babies big because they had all that extra cooking time or were they measuring as whoppers before?

I thought this might happen to me as my baby and bump are huge. Measuring at 43 weeks now - hugeness confirmed by growth scan. I am now 39 +4 with no sign whatsoever of baby coming. I was sure DC would have arrived by now. Don't get your hopes up!!!!

CarGirl · 03/10/2010 20:22

My 10lb 6ozer had a femur length at 98% or something crazy like that (I'm 5') she was all length not a "bruiser". most several people assumed I was pregnant with twins on hearing my due date Hmm

I didn't measure large though so they kept telling me that I wasn't have a big baby!

lynniep · 03/10/2010 20:24

Yeah, my 10lb 3oz DS2 was 4 days late. But he was quick to arrive when he did eventually turn up!

merryandmad · 03/10/2010 20:24

The community midwife estimated DD2 to be slightly bigger than DD1- so expected around 8.5 lb mark. She wasn't measuring big.
She got a bit of a shock when she came for the 1st home visit.
But don't think it was the extra cooking time either, as DD1 was even later

Giddyup · 03/10/2010 20:24

There is just no way of knowing is there? bah!

10lb and two weeks late
11lb and five days late

Both showed up as average sizes on scans

CarGirl · 03/10/2010 20:27

Yes my first was induced at 7 days late and 7lb 6 - so the second was 3lbs heavier in 10 days.....

Third one was induced on my due date (nightmare she wasn't ready) titchy at 9lb 2oz, fourth one was induced at 14 days over 9lb 10oz

onimolap · 03/10/2010 20:27

Don't think there's anyvway if predicting. But I thought it was head circumference which made the real difference to ease of delivery?

beepbeep · 03/10/2010 20:28

my DS was 10.1lb and 7 days early, very easy birth though. DD1 was 8.1lb and 10 days early and DD2 was 9.7lb and 3 days early, they thought DD2 was going to be big (but only cause previous baby was DS), they measured DS as 'too small' at 20wk scan and had to be rescanned!!

Giddyup · 03/10/2010 20:32

Mine has its fathers stupid little pin head apparently, looks to be about 25th centile! It's clearly a worm...I'm a bit concerned really as I thought head and abdo were supposed to be the same? None of the professionals seem bothered though, so I guess the poor thing just has DPs head and my jelly belly.

Dont have a clue about the early/lateness but I will say that DD1 (no.2) was the worst of my 3 deliveries and she only 6lb (DS was 7 lb 8 and DD2 6lb 14oz).

teaandcakeplease · 03/10/2010 20:35

My son who was 9lbs and 8 oz was 3 days early.

TheOldestCat · 03/10/2010 20:40

My whopper (9lbs2.5oz with a off-the-scale big head) was nine days late - and was measuring big on scans.

BUT despite his large bonce, it was a much easier birth than much-smaller DD.

sancerrre · 04/10/2010 18:23

I just read somewhere else on here that larger babies are born quicker as there's more baby for your uterus muscles to get hold of to squeeze out, iyswim. So I'm clutching to that particular straw of optimism for mine.
