Night sweats - how to manage them

I know night sweats are normal post birth but just wondering the best way to manage them. During my precious sleep time I keep waking up boiling hot pooled in sweat then freezing cold. It's v annoying when I am only getting a few hours sleep! Making my bed really uncomfy too.

Bump, wondering if wearing pjs will make it better or worse?

Hi Bumper, hope you didn't do any housework earlier ;)

I had no clue about the night sweats before I had DD, and I had spent ages and ages reading up on pg and chatting to the midwives etc - but nobody warned me! It does pass but it is a vile sensation waking up with a waterlogged cleavage!

All I can suggest is wearing pjs and lying on a towel, just to preserve your bedding, and keep a spare towel by the bed for mopping purposes (childbirth is so glamorous).

Thanks, will try a towel & pjs to stop the chills afterwards.

Family are all fine now thanks, sickness all gone thankfully. And no I didn't do any housework earlier! I watched come dine with me and smelt my newborn! Tis sad to say, but I really didn't appreciate dd1 enough as a baby, just wanted to get through it :(. But good that I am feeling better this time.

LTR how are you feeling?

Grin at smelling your newborn! So so lovely - dunno what happened to my fragrant bundle, she smells of houmous and yoghurt and stuff these days :)

Yeah dd1 just has a yucky sweet 'nursery' smell!

Ohhhhh. I had this when I had my first DD. Woke up sweating and shivering at the same time, didn't know what was going on at all. I thought I was just wierd. So no advice, bumper, just felt the need to mark my place!

I've been getting night sweats before I've had the baby, I'm 38+1 and pyjamas do help as they're the first defence rather than sheets! On the advice of AbfabT on my antenatal forum I've bought some brolly sheets which will also help guard against general leakiness. I also find that waking up as I start to sweat actually stops it! TBH I'd rather sweat than be all bloated with water retention. I'm thinking of it as an early insight into what the menopause will be like!
