Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I started having contractions (assumed they were braxton hicks) on Friday but they were pretty frequent (say six or seven in an hour). Went to bed worried but not overly. Woke up Saturday and my tummy was like a rock and the baby was not and would not move. Rang the hospital who said to come in. This was about eight am. On the way in the baby began to move about and so I was reassured and kind of thought well we are being overly cautious now.

Anyway they monitored me and the baby then went off with the results. Next thing I know I am being moved down to the delivery suite and they are talking about preterm Labour! I cant tell you how white I went! They hook me back up to another monitor in a delivery room and send in a registrar who asks if I will have a test called a fetal fibronectine test. While she is examining me she said that my cervix was soft and that had a 'show' and with this and the readings of my contractions they may have to disregard this test any how as they were feeling I was going into labour.

Any way to cut a tiresome long story short ( the registrar spoke to the consultants who said my test (the FFN) was negative and so on that basis I could go home but to take it easy.

I have no idea where that leaves me because they said it was a test that said I wouldnt go into labour for the next 48 hours but when I have looked it up on the net it says two weeks. (But then the test I had came back with the result in seven mins so I am wondering if it is a slightly different one as it was not sent to a lab or anything).

All I know is that I am in bed now taking it easy (still having contractions every ten mins or so but they are not really painful unless I try to move, just very uncomfortable).

Can any one shed any kind of light on this? Is it a sign I will go early or just an irritable uterus or braxton hicks? I left the hospital none the wiser really and wish now I had of asked more questions. I have since rung the midwife but they dont know either.

Any ideas or experiences would be most welcomed.

OMG!!!

This totally happened to me last week!!!

How annoying is it when they send you away after all the drama?!

Sorry for the excitement, I just presumed that I was the only bugger to ever have gone through this!!

I have been having contractions on and off since I was at hospita. They eased off slightly, but stil very painful at times.

No answers, just 'rest up'.

I am however booked in to see a consultant tomorrow to discuss ELCS (not related to this though, was already planned) and discuss stuff, so will most definitely be bringing this up!!

This is dc2 for me and am totally clueless - last time I was in such pain I was 5cm dilated and in labour (but had no idea).

Wil let you know how it goes.

Oh please if you do find any answers (and to be honest I only think you will get any from a consultant as the registrar who was dealing with me also didnt know what to do and had to ask the consultant). Please let me know how you get on. How many weeks are you? I am 30 weeks.

I just hit 33 weeks.

I will certainly let you know if he sheds any light on anything.

I felt like such a fool after all the drama - like they didn't believe me or something (even though the monitor was picking up the contractions).
Suppose as long as baby is ok and our general health is good nothing much they can do - after all it is very early.

Frustrating though!! Especially when there are no answers! Just a pat on the back and a 'take care, see you later'!

I would just like to butt in ... no idea about preterm labour but would like to add not to panic if baby is born early. My DS was born at 30 weeks and after a hairy first six weeks he is now fit and healthy with no lifelong damage (MRI confirmed)

Good luck and hope you do hang on for much longer but with an easing of pain

@Mrspear thanks that is good to know. I was terrified when they were talking about giving birth when I still have ten weeks to go!

Just thought I'd add that I saw consultant today and there is no worries with the pain factor. Advice was just to keep doing what I'm doing and if it happens it happens!

Have got y elcs booed too now and after checks the rest of pg looks fine and healthy.

Midwife suggested it was just Braxton Hicks.
Hmm.
I am dubious.

Well I spoke to a midwife at the hospital (the community midwives dont appear to have a clue) and she said that Labour can start and stop at any time and premature contractions should be being closely monitored. On the basis of the phone call she gave me an urgent appointment to a consultant on Monday and said I must stay resting and off work for another week. She said braxton hicks come and go without going on the best part of a week. She did also say that this episode does not increase the likelihood of a premature birth however it needs careful monitoring. So glad to finally speak to someone who appeared to know what they were talking about! Thanks for the update threelittleducks! I hope it all goes well for you.
