GBS and having skin to skin

Hi,

I'm currently 36+6 and am thinking about my birth plan!

I have group b strep and have been thinking about getting skin to skin contact after the birth. I know they need to check the baby for signs of infection after birth but how quickly do they need to do this? Obviously I am anxious to know that the baby is ok, but I'd like to have a relatively calm time after the birth and had some skin to skin time with the baby. I know it's more important that they check the baby over, and I wouldn't stop them, just wondering how quickly the will whisk the baby away from me!

Thanks in advance!

I have GBS and haven't heard anything about it affecting skin-to-skin contact. I have to stay in hospital for 36-48 hours after the birth so they can monitor the baby for signs of infection, so could this be what you are thinking about?

Hi there
I was GBS +and had lots of skin to skin - the baby was just kept under obs for approx 36 hours afterwards (I was kept in until then) but a lot of that was due to the fact that cons paed was too busy to come and do final checks.
Is this your first?

Also how did you both know you have GBS? did you do the private tests? I am preg with DC2 who I'll be having in a different hosp and apprently there are issues with going to the MW led unit if you're GBS+ and I'm not sure what to do about testing.

I have to stay in hospital for 48 hours after the birth too, and have known that pretty much throughout the pregnancy - well actually I was told 12 hours until last week!

It's more the immediate moments after birth I am thinking of, how quickly will they check the baby will they whisk the baby off and check them over before I get a chance to have a cuddle and a bit of skin to skin? Nothing has been mentioned to me about not being able to have skin to skin I've just been thinking about it the last couple of days, people just say they will check the baby once they are born but haven't gone into more detail!

Thanks

Somehow managed to cross post you champagnesupernova !

The gbs showed up in my routine urine sample at 9 or so weeks, and I had antibiotics at 12 weeks (dr told me it was safe to wait til after the scan, but not sure that was best idea after reading up about it!)

Was told from the very beginning that I wouldn't be able to have the baby at a midwife led unit and would have to be in hospital in order to get the antibiotics needed in labour. My local hospital is moving premises at the end of this month and has one labour ward in 2 sections one low risk and the other for women who need extra monitoring. I am hoping that I will still be able to be on the low risk side of the door as the rooms are much nicer and less hospital like!!

I think you can have the test done privately but surely if you have had gbs in a previous pregnancy they will automatically test you?

Yes it's my first, can you tell?!

I had plenty of skin to skin. A pead didn't visit for quite a while.
